Bari's metro railway is basically a S-Bahn. It's not completly grade seperated, as you can see in the first video and it shares tracks with other conventional trains.

The trains itself look great and could be a prime example for other S-Bahn networks. However the stations are pretty disappointing imho. I fear they might attract graffiti and vandalism.

Infact it is (name of the line is FM1)

It is part of the Suburban railway system in Bari

http://www.cityrailways.net/metroitaliane/bari.html

Anyway its infrastructure (from s. Girolamo station) was newly built with a full metro charatteristic (viaduct and tunnel) and its run is urban, while the other lines run on conventional existing tracks

I hope in the future they could upgrade FM1 in a full-metro line

Do you know why they chose to go underground? I ask because so many cities now are trying to avoid subway sections because of what they claim to be a dramatic increase in costs.

They used the "cutting" system; so the costs are not so expensive compared to the underground solution.

Damn! I went to Italy back in November and I thought I had done all the metro systems and high-speed lines then. First the Milan-Bologna line opens, and now this!
