Thanks

Victoria Terminus (now "Chhatripati Shivaji" Terminus, like every other bloody place in the city...), an architectural masterpiece. A construction of architect Frederick William Stephens, it was built in the late 1800s. Following a trend in massive British public works (later exemplified through the perfection of Lutyens' 'Delhi order' of Indo-Saracenic architecture), the building is in Indo-Saracenic style. This is, of course, a medley of British and an orientalist, generic 'Indian' style of building. Somewhat modelled on St. Pancreas, VT is a brilliant addition to the cosmopolitan face of Bombay's architecture and a stunning world heritage site.

One of the best looking railway stations of that period. Ornate beyond words.

Indeed - if anything, the Raj should be remembered for its contributions to architecture - the Indo Gothic style.

Here's a section of Crawford Market and the surrounding area. Named after Bombay's first municipal commissioner, the market features exquisite Normano-Gothic architecture. It's an odd but brilliant blend of Norman Romanesque architecture (reminiscent of Norman architecture in England like the various halls of Oakham Castle and Durham Cathedral, to a degree) and English Gothic architecture. Most British-built buildings in India bore the mark of the Raj's distinctive architectural fusion - Victorian buildings with subtle Indian flair, for example. Crawford has no such explicit structural modification. The element of orientalism that was so common in British Raj architecture is visible only though Lockwood Kipling's (Rudyard's pop) various friezes depicting Indian farmers.

The surrounding area is quintessential Bombay:

I love the crazy clutter and activity that epitomise Mumbai as shown in the first Crawford market shot.

I just want to remoove all the rubbish covering these buildings and clean them up to thier former glory. I suppose this would be de-Indianising them or would it just be gentrifying them?

Great photos indeed!

Many buildings in South Mumbai such as the victorian era ones need major renovation & repairs. Crawford Market and the surrounding buildings need immediate renovation and bring back the glory days.

CST is getting renovated from the outside and the BMC building has been renovated beautifully.
