Well exactly Leo.
Bizarre to think that was ever meant to be temporary really. But seriously, can we get back on topic, this venue is flying up (there was practically nothing on the ground a month ago) and we've let an idiot noob ruin the thread. I think I'll repost this photo as it got lost amonst Almeria's little gallery on the last couple of pages: How long do we think it'll take before the external panels and roof are complete? |

I suppose the down side of the external skin powering ahead is that we won't see any of the construction happen inside. Once the skin is on, there won't be much visible on the webcams. Just watch this thread die then...
...until they test the feature lighting

May I start with an off topic question, on the previous page (p8) there was a building above the velodrome and I've not seen it before, but I love it! Could anybody please name it for me?
Back on topic, loving the venue and loving how quick it's all going up. I really cannot wait for the games. |

Well architects generally are prone to egotism it's true, but let's be honest, it's about the brief and budget as much as the architects with all of these things. Isn't the IBC by Allies and Morrison? If so, there's nowt wrong with them as architects. Not that the IBC is the finest building it's true (slight understatement there).

Allies & Morrisson just applied the 'flourishes' to the original architects design; i.e. alternate cladding on the IBC and the yellow tinged cladding to the MPC.

^ Indeed of the large British firms, Allies and Morrison probably have one of the most consistent standards of quality in their projects though they can sometimes be a bit underwhelming due to their caution towards the technological flashy stuff (things Wilkinson Eyre, RSH, Fosters, Grimshaw et al are quite comfortable and adept at doing)
They however if i remember right were only brought on at a late stage (after being thrown off initially due to their expense in favour of cheaper architects) to try and remedy what had become a dire proposal so they've made the best of a bad situation. edit: ah DJL just posted virtually the same thing |

Even with the alternate cladding the concept remains all over the place. Its not about budget but brains.
1. Extend the cladding "grey and white" block concept to the paving and public spaces in and around the IBC. Use as a palette with LOCOG and the LOGO colours integrated with the bland template. The cladding could act as an extension to paving of the exact same pattern, creeping its way up the IBC facade, but not all the way to the top 2. Extend this to the permanent MPC perhaps with concrete fibre c panels as cladding rather than the "fun yellow" bits. 3. Really push the industrial feel with the facade scaffolding type steel structure around the site and around the MPC 4. You just have to reduce the bulk of the building. The height and floor space are pivotal but as a structure the bulk is just hideous, especially given the textures and contours of other venues in the park. 5. There are no real measures to reduce the visual/height impact of the IBC 6. There is no sense of arriving at the venue and no sense of place. The "entrance" tucked away between the hideous parking structure and non descript IBC offices 7. Use the massive sattelites that will be located on one end of the site as a feature of the venue not hidden away in some backyard, as an interface with the Handball Arena. |
