Stavros Niarchos Foundation
Cultural Center - Update The approval of the SNFCC Preliminary Environmental Study, in August 2010, signaled a significant step forward in the process of moving towards the beginning of the construction phase of the project. The final environmental permit was received recently, while the building permit is expected early in the summer. The next few months are critical, since a number of important steps have to be taken, and certain deadlines have to be met in order for the project to conclude the design phase and begin the construction phase. The first of these important steps is the completion of the SNFCC design and the tender documents, which are expected to be finalized by the end of the summer of 2011. The completion of the tender documents will lead into the next step, which is the bidding process. The time frame of the project requires for the bidding process to have been completed by the end of the year, leading into the selection of the General Contractor and consequently the beginning of the project’s construction, in late 2011. In anticipation of the completion of the SNFCC design, an official presentation of the plans by the architect, Renzo Piano, for both the media and the public, is scheduled for June 29th, while a virtual tour informative video of the project and the updated version of the SNFCC brochure will also be released in the summer of 2011. http://www.snf.org/texts/uploads/fil...2011%20web.pdf

Great released pictures, here is the map of the refreshment of the whole area of Delta Falirou, the water front parks, the sport facilities plus marinas, around the project of Cultural oark of Stavros Niarchos, a whole little World on the beach coast of Athens full of green and culture desighned by famous Renzo.... Bike routes and solar energy establishments are in schedule. Wooden decks going far in the sea too.
Athens will have a a second landmark after Acropolis when this project will finish...!! Here is the map of the area in the future, big part of Poseidonos highway will be underground so the beach coast parks will be easily accessable by the citizens from the urban area side.

Hopefully it's not just day dreaming and the whole thing will actually be build.
Best of luck to the Greeks(though given the current Greek financial plight and economic debacle it is quite unlikely that the project will kick start anytime soon as it is no secret that the country is verging on bankruptcy) Indeed, as far as I can see the omens are not very good ![]() http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/e...uts-again.html |

The construction of this project has nothing to do with greek current financial situation, since it is funding from A to Z by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Construction will begin later this year, and a big BRAVO for Niarchos, a great benefactor of Greece, is more than deserved.

SAVE THE DATE 29/06/2011
The event is centered on the presentation of the final architectural plans for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre by the project’s architect, Renzo Piano, but it will be accompanied also by a number of simultaneous activities! Exhibitions dedicated to the architect’s designs, as well as to the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Park will be open from 19:00. The exhibitions will remain open to the public for the next four days, until July 3rd. Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to send their wishes, thoughts, desires and dreams for the Library, the Opera House and the Park, in a unique way! A short film, showing a detailed, three-dimensional representation of the SNFCC as it will look upon its completion in 2015, will be screened for the very first time. The above mentioned activities together with many more surprises will be part of a public, open Celebration! The presentation will be held at the SNFCC site, at the former horse racing track, in the Delta of Faliron. As construction is about to commence, we suggest you wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Since the event is open to the public, entry will be granted on a first-come-first-served basis (for your convenience, please register here). http://www.snfcc-june29.gr/SaveTheDate/Home/IndexEN

Piano Pens Athens Cultural Centre
Published on 13-04-2011 by Skyscrapernews.com If you were a betting man, then looking at the current economic situation in Greece and their government attempts at austerity you may have thought that the plans for grand cultural projects in Athens would have taken a hit. If you did you'd be wrong. Officially known as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, the project by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop will accommodate the Greek National Opera House and Greek National Library. Welcoming visitors and researchers alike will be an impressive frontage that when approached from the Olympic Esplanade will present a quadrupled height glazed section with highly transparent glass and slender perimeter columns behind it - something of a trademark touch for Piano - that will rise to a cathedral sized height of 30 metres. Dramatic diagonal staircases sweep up either side of the entrance, with the standing proudly above the main bulk of the building supported by the perimeter columns and crossbracing creating a sheltered green roof sitting under a canopy of 10,000 square metres of solar panels. As with the British Library, the internal highlight of the building will be a book tower that is on display to visitors once they have entered the building. Within this will be thousands of historical books and documents, some of the cream of the library's collection. Topping the building will be a quadruple aspect glazed room that will provide sweeping views over Athens towards the mountains that ring the Greek city that will have direct access to the ground for visitors via express escalators. Also Connected to this there will be a large external space over the roof of the building with a landscaped pedestrian route that gradually begins ground level having risen up at a shallow gradient. Numerous changes will also be made around the base of the site with new paths connecting the building to Niarchos Park that are designed to be like traditional Greek roads with rough paving and a canal to be set along the side of the building that references the old maritime roots of Athens that saw the Greek world dominate western civilization. ![]() http://www.skyscrapernews.com/ ![]() http://www.skyscrapernews.com/ |
