Not that I mind the artistic improvement, but this seems to be a large drain on tax money.

I'm not too fond of urban hive, honestly. But that Kring looks pretty awesome!

Hi guys, I'm looking for some information. Can anyone give me any information about this area of Seoul:

What is the name of the area?
Does anyone have any old photos of the area, say from 20 or 30 years ago? What did it look like then? I read that the Seoul tower was built in 1969 and opened to the public in 1980; is it possible to get

I've walked around the area and though it is very densely developed, it seems like a fairly affluent middle class area with some very nice houses and flats. Was it always like this or was it once a poorer area that has developed over time into what it is now?

I'm interested because I'm an urban planner looking at the development of some Asian cities. Judging by the photos, this seems to have been developed in a pretty unplanned haphazard fashion, which I can imagine originally urban planners didn't like. I am only guessing because I don't know the area's history (hence why I'm asking here), but I can imagine the planners would have looked at areas like this and wanted to redevelop them because they do not conform to a regular plan. It was clear when I walked around that area however, that dispite it not being formally planned, the urban environment is actually not poor quality. On the contrary, I remember it appearing to be a rather nice place to live.

So, can anyone help me out here? Any photos or information that might shed light on the development of this, or other areas like it in Seoul?

Here's another pic I took from N Seoul Tower towards the Han River. An interesting mix of development here:

Edit: After having looked around the Korean forums I've realised that this is probably not the best place to ask this question, so I've reposted this request in the following thread:

I think you're showing a part of Itaewon or some area nearby the Itaewon subway stop. Here's what these houses look like at street level:

Just average or below average by Korean standards. Not affluent, no.

It's because the neighborhood is in a hill, which makes it hard to build straight streets and hence to have a "planned" street layout. When korean cities are located on flat ground, the street pattern will be rectangular generally (Seocho, Bundang, Goyang, Centum city, etc).
