I find it hard to call people left and right these days, Labor's policies don't adhere to any market ideology making them more Liberal and Conservative than the those on the Liberal Party who are zealous in their faith in the free market.

I wonder how the Liberal government would have handled the economic downturn in 08? Labor just created jobs for their union mates (school halls, insulation, retail etc.) and did nothing to help other industries.

Left and right are monikers used by the braindead to reduce the amount of cognitive thought they need to submit to.
To contend that all human idealism and thought falls into two clearly defined sets is the height of idiocy. |

One question I have:
How does off-shore processing reduce assylum seeker numbers if the chance of gaining assylum in Australia remains the same, but just the location where they are processed is changed?

I'm not sure it was ever about reducing numbers, it seems partly about looking like something is being done.
The original offshore plan had something to do with legality, removing the process from some Australian legal restrictions? Like that article said, lawyers didn't have access etc. With the Malaysia plan, it was in response to the Christmas Island deaths. By making the boat trip from Indonesia pointless, they were trying to stop people coming on leaky boats. |

I have so much insider info on the whole Malaysia/Christmas island thing, I have a few friends at dept of immi. They were all at Christmas island last week "just in case" the law sided with the Malaysia deal... they got sent back to Perth when the verdict was handed down. They were there to send people to Malaysia as quick as possible, not to process people to enter Australia!
It seems to be "policy", that if people remain locked up and processing is slow, then that will discourage more boats from coming. After seeing this happen, one of them quit when they returned to Perth. He/she had finally seen enough. |

This is what concerns me. It seems it has nothing to do with the location, but rather everything to do with side-stepping laws.Heck, maybe they should set up a few non-prison like centres in the middle of no-where in Australia and claim they are increasing employment for Australians. Turn it into a positive. The more assylum seekers the more employment

well Christopher Pine has landed Tony Abbott in it:
http://www.smh.com.au/national/abbot...908-1jz5l.html Now the story here goes that while Abbott has been prevaricating like a good politician on the issue, Christopher Pine was out today saying categorically "no pair". The problem is that the kind of talkback radio that usually awash with "ditch the witch" were suddenly all aghast - how dare a father be kept from his newborn? Amazing. Moreso because it's Craig Thompson in question here - a man who would, apparently (albeit not to a legal certainly), (1) frequent brothels and (2) make his union pay for it! |

45,000 turned out to rally against Barry O'Farrels vision for New South Wisconsin. Hardly rates a mention in the media compared to the disproportionate coverage that a few hundred got for the convoy of no consequence.

Massive turn out. Apparently they only expected 20,000. According to Barry it was "chaos for the sake of chaos" and "an act of bastardry."
Liberals not off to a good start in NSW. Federal politics though, sorry... |

To be honest, the whole thing is a joke. If you want to have a general strike (because you're protesting policy) then have a general strike. However, in the federal sphere, no union would dare do this sort of thing - action without an industrial dispute on foot - because they'd be fined out of existence. The NSW unions can now expect a copy of the federal union regulations in the next four years... |

The pairing thing is ridiculous. I hope the libs are lambasted for it if it happens. All coming from the man who skipped the stimulus package vote.

For obvious reasons Australian politics doesnt make the news over here, however it was reported yesterday that Gillard had to cut short her state visit as there is word of a leadership challenge. Does this mean the shit is about to really hit the fan?
I've got to say it, I really want her out. She might be doing an ok job considering she has no room to move with her wafer thin majority. That said, something her fanbois here seem completely oblivious to is that the electorate have gone off her. Those numbers are shocking, she is polling worse than Rudd when she knifed him. In her own words back in June 2010 no one can come back from numbers that low. I honestly think the longer she stays in the more damage she does to the Labor brand. Trying to get her stick it out and hoping for a change in her fortunes in 3-6 or 12 months time isnt worth it. Thank Christ the Libs have shot themselves in the foot with their own leader. Unfortunately I cant think of anyone who I think would make a good party leader to replace Gillard. Either way its going to be a very interesting (unstable) year ahead for Federal politics.

Whether you like Julia or not what's the point changing Leaders if the Government keeps the same policies ? I laugh when I read disparaging remarks about any leader of any party when all the people who pull the strings are standing just out of sight making decisions. Tony's about face on the Baby or Carbon Vote issue shows the party decides what's what.
If the realists agree the Labor Party and appendages are gone...later or sooner ? Why introduce the Carbon Tax Bill when everyone knows it will be chucked out soon.......what a waste of more money !

Theres is some truth to that. When Jules came in they sold her as a fresh look for Labor with fresh policies, which was kinda true until she got elected then it was the same policies coming back and she's getting smacked in the polls. Pretty bad decision.

Appropriate anti-carbon tax. Encapsulates the Liberal Party entirely.
