The BBC is one of the most unbiased news broadcasters in the world, as well as being the most respected. Hence it's global appeal that makes it the largest in the world.

I think Plank means it's football coverage. It's the same as Sky Sports. They are afraid to challenge big clubs because they will lose interviews. Alex Ferguson did it to the BBC a few seasons back. He refused them interviews for MOTD because he deemed them to be too critical. The reason outside broadcasters like RTE can be more critical is that they don't recieve RTE in England (at least I don't think they do) so the clubs don't care. Could you imagine the types of criticisms above being shown on Sky or the BBC!? I don't think so!

As for news, which they are really respected for, there is no comparison really for the competency of the organisation in that respect. Sky News, the only real 24hr news competitor in the UK, is basically a tabloid newspaper in video form.

As odlum says the BBC arselick everyone when it come to sport. The arselicking on MOTD is a joke. The BBC Rugby is a joke aswell. Far rather watch Hook and Brent Pope fight it out on the Rugby. And Dunphy for the football.
