Moscow to purchase new trams
Monday, April 18, 2016

THE city government of Moscow has announced plans to order 50 new LRVS for Roubles 5bn ($US 74m) by the end of the year, with similar orders expected to be placed in each of the next five years

The city will only purchase Russian-built trams as the purchase of foreign LRVs besides those from Belarus and Kazakhstan is forbidden in Russia since January 1 2015

The government of Moscow oblast is quite skilled at announcing LRT lines. In fact, they do so quite skillfully on what seems like a semi-annual basis.

Where their skills are lacking, however, is actually building them.

What is the story behind what I have heard that Moscow is to close its trolleybus system?

That's not true. They will only cease operation on downtown lines and replace them with ecologically friendly buses.

My impression was that service outside of downtown will continue.

In transport Orwell-speak, "ecologically friendly" nowadays means a bus with a diesel engine in it! A trolleybus is an ecologically friendly bus and congested downtowns are where you need electric transit most. This is a strange decision if true, unless somehow they can run on batteries through downtown and recharge them on wires through the suburbs.

Here is a map of central Moscow showing in red the lines that will be removed; the ones in green will be retained. Kremlin and Red Square are in the center of the map

Only several lines in the center are going to be removed. But it seems Miscow's mayor really hates trolleys and he will close all the system in the next few years.

Currently Moscow has the largest trolleybus system in the world. It is possible that Moscow will lose its status in the coming years.

Moscow - 584 km of wires
Kiev - 500 km of wires
St Petersburg - 493 km of wires
Minsk - 492.12 km of wires

Sooner is better.
Time to get rid of this type of public transportation.

I don't think that Moscow should get rid of trolleybuses, because fumes would make air more polluted

I agree. I think that Moscow should not follow the bad example of the western cities that removed their trolleybuses network, because it could be a big error.

Many people think that the trolleybuses are old and outdated. This is not true. A modern trolleybus is ecological, noiseless and more comfortable than a bus. Nothing is more ecologically friendly than a trolleybus!

Except for a streetcar (no rubber consumption, higher capacity).

I agree. While I wouldn't go for starting a new trolley bus network in a city that doesn't have them it would make no sense to remove them if you already have them. No sense at all. Keep them going and maybe have some battery-powered buses that can charge when going under the wires? Seems like something that would make effecient use of already existing electric infrastructure.
