By the way, according to some news and two tenders Moscow will get 1800 12-meter low floor buses (500 will feature air-conditionning) and 70 18-meter articulated buses. The point is Moscow new authorities plan to replace all non-low-floor buses (up to those made in 2004) by new and modern ones. The buses that won't have reach their resource limits will be re-sold in other Russia's regions.

This will be the biggest Moscow bus purchase ever.

Several years ago I was telling that Moscow buses are outdated and very badly maintained on the whole but now the situation has greatly changed. In 2011, Moscow has ordered almost 2100 new modern low-floor and air-conditioned buses. Not all of them are on service now as the plant, I guess, can't manufacture them all in time. However, new buses are now widely spread throughout the city and I really feel they are numerous.

I don`t understand... What is the reason to make platforms short? New conception of tramway is middle capacity light rail, grade separated, sometimes on upper or lower level on intersections, sometimes on viaducts or in short tunnels. Tram-trains are usually not shorter then 25m, to provide high capacity and cost/efficiency.

For cities like Moscow I expect that trams are 40-60m tram-trains, average speed 22-30km/h, enter and exit on all dors, at working days 7h-19h intervals on every line not longer than 7 minutes, not more then 3 lines share same tracks on a part of the network.

Well, by saying that I meant short in comparison with metro station platforms which are 160 meters.

But this "new" and "modern" buses are bad quality of assemblage also have problems with maintenance service, especially LiAZ-6213/5292.

Moscow is living a total reconstruction of tram lines throughout the city.

Today (actually, yesterday) I took some pictures of line in Baumanskaya street.

MOSCOW | Public Transport

Let's begin with the buses, don't we? First regular bus route appeared in Moscow in 1924. Today there's over 700 of them served by over 6691 buses (as of today) devided between 19 bus depots. On average, every day 8 mln muscovites ride a bus at least twice. Bus network is really vast, especially on the outskirts, so there's almost not a single street in the city where there's no at least 1 bus route. Yet, in the historical center there are not so many bus routes (due to narrow streets and ecological matters).

Municipal bus (as well as trolleybus and tram) routes are operated by Mosgortrans state unitary enterprise. Among the most popular buses are LiAZ and Ikarus. There go a few pics.

A small bus for unpopular routes, PAZ 3237








Ikarus 280. These were always popular in Moscow. They even used to assemble them in Moscow in late 90's. Some 5-7 years ago this was the most widespread articulated bus. Now there are pretty few left.








Apart from regular bus routes they are currently developing bus rapid transit. All rapid routes are operated by usual LiAZ 5292 with the only difference - color (express are in orange-red, regular - in white-green):

The rolling stock in Moscow is now almost all new and low-floor.

LiAZ-5292.21:



A new "Megapolis" trolleybus from Trollza. In front of it as well as behind, there are 2 belorussian BKM trolleybuses. And there's one LiAZ-5292.21 that could also be seen.

Intamin. By the way since April 1st, tickets for metro are valid for monorail line, too. Yesterday I took a ride with my friend.
