Is M&M Plant in Cheyyar a car plant or a tractor plant? still confused.

M&M plans Rs 1,500cr car factory in Cheyyar
TK Rohit & M Gunasekaran | TNN

Chennai: A year after Mahindra & Mahindra pulled out of its joint venture with global majors Renault and Nissan to produce cars at Oragadam, the Indian utility vehicle major is all set to re-enter Tamil Nadu by driving further south to set up a car plant in Cheyyar, about 100km from Chennai, in Tiruvannamalai district.
The M&M investment will be the second big ticket investment in Cheyyar after global shoe major Nike’s manufacturing unit, which was inaugurated in August. M&M’s plans in Cheyyar are likely to spur automotive investments in the area.
“The state government will allot about 400 acres for the project. The modalities are still being worked out and an MoU with M&M will happen in two months. They (M&M) will invest about Rs 1,500 crore for the car project,” state government sources said. ‘M&M may build tractors in Cheyyar’
Chennai: Mahindra & Mahindra is working out the modalities to set up a auto plant in Cheyyar, 100 km from Chennai, in Tiruvannamalai district. A team of M&M officials had visited Cheyyar recently and completed a feasibility report for the project.
M&M officials were unavailable for comment as most of them were travelling, according to a spokesperson.
Even as sources maintained that M&M would make passenger cars in Cheyyar, industry sources said that the Mahindras, through the JV with French carmaker Renault, had spare capacity at their Nashik plant. “M&M has been planning a tractor manufacturing unit in the south and it has been a stated intent of the management to have a manufacturing presence in the region,” sources said.
Sources said that the “package of incentives” proposed for the company were expected to be placed before the state cabinet soon for approval. The state government offers various incentives, ranging from waivers on land registration tax to electricity charges, for companies setting up facilities here.
Termed the ‘Detroit of South East Asia’, Tamil Nadu is home to Hyundai, Ford, BMW, Daimler, Nissan and Renault, apart from desi biggies like TVS and Ashok Leyland.

Looks like it would have provision for both utility vehicles and tractors.

Nissan to produce Ashok Leyland LCV
Thursday, 12 Nov 2009

Quote:
Ashok Leyland may move its low cost vehicle production to Nissan's Chennai plant. This also comes on the back of Renault freezing its car manufacturing plans.

Ms Swati Khandelwal in an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18 said that Nissan is likely to use its Chennai facility for LCV production. This Chennai facility is currently a 50-50 joint venture between Renault and Nissan, where Renault has frozen the investments indefinitely.

Ashok Leyland which is a joint venture partner with Nissan in a separate LCV project for the Indian market, is likely to come into Nissan’s Chennai facility and rollout LCV products from there. There is no confirmation whether Ashok Leyland will be picking up a stake in the 50-50 joint venture between Renault and Nissan at Chennai or they will be investing there or it could possibly be a contract manufacturing setup between Nissan and Ashok Leyland. But for sure Ashok Leyland will be rolling out its LCV products from Nissan’s Chennai facility. Both these companies have identified two LCV products for the Indian market. The first one will be LCV 200 Vanette and second will be people mover LVC which will come in eventually. Nissan’s senior management met up with almost 300 Indian suppliers on October 26 and discussed the plans and product plans going forward.

She said that the company did confirm the news and said that both companies will be using the available facilities in the first phase and the product development activities continue. However further announcements will be made in the future.

The earlier reports said once the market improves for Commercial Vehicles, they may use the new land for a dedicated facility. Also the land is still not allotted due to some legal issues.

Renault Nissan project stuff is really confusing me. This project news some how finds a place in the newspapers and confuses me a lot.

Is this 1 lakh project jointly proposed by BAJAJ-NISSAN-RENAULT?

I would be very happy if this is the one

No.. this is nissan's micra car. Only the plant is shared, not the products.

Renault-bajaj's car will be produced AFAIK in bajaj's plant.

TN clears M&M's 1800 cr auto project near Chennai

Tamil Nadu Cabinet on Thursday cleared the proposal of Mahindra & Mahindra to set up an automobile project at Cheyyar near Chennai with
an investment tag of Rs 1800 crore

The Government has already allotted 200 acres of the total 450 acres required for the project which will have a capacity of 1.5 lakh that will primarily manufacture tractors, SUVs and commercial vehicles besides auto parts. It will have the flexiability to make cars if the company desired so. The investment will also cover a dedicated test track so that the company will have an integrated operation.

Besides this facility, M & M will utilise its existing landbank of 100 odd acres at Mahindra world city at Maraimalainagar to set up one of the world’s largest R & D and vehicle design centres. The MoU for the project is expected to be inked in about two months.
Official sources said the investment will generate direct jobs for 2500 people and several thousand jobs indirectly.

The multiplier effect of the project will mean an additional investment of over Rs 5000 crore, they said.
"By default, it would have gone to Maharashra where M & M has huge land bank. But, it is a hard won project for Tamil Nadu considering the slow down in the global market. It is expected to make it an undisputed leader in the auto space which will be difficult to be challenged by other States", the sources.

It is also a striking victory for the State considering the series of labour unrest and disputes the State had witnessed in the last couple of months.

The sources said the State has already signed MoUs and cleared projects for creating a capacity of 13.5 lakh cars per annum. "Given the global slow down, the M & M investment is a big victory for the State. It will reinforce its leadership position in the auto sector", they said.

M & M clinching the deal in TN also comes close on the heels of its strained relationship with Renault ( Over the failure of Logan car) and the three way venture between Renault-Nissan and Bajaj for the small car project finally taking shape.

M & M’s mega investment near Chennai will also herald the entry of Indian’s numero uno tractor major into the State, which already has the second largest tractor manufacturer, Tafe and Deutsche-Same.

It also signals Mahindra’s big bang return to the Detroit of India after it had exited the JV with Ford Motors which was floated to set up the greenfield project near Chennai.

Can any one enlighten me on the connectivity between Chennai and Ceyyar ?
If TN needs to sustain manufacturing growth, Cheyyar should be developed on par with Oragadam or Sriperumpudur. Cheyyar also needs to compete with TADA or Nellore in AP.

For some reason, I thought it is located close to ECR. It was selected for Ultra Mega Power Project also.
