Nissan to make India export hub

Quote:
NEW DELHI: Japanese auto major Nissan Motor wants to become the largest car exporter from India, a senior executive said.

The second largest carmaker in Japan is also planning to make India the launch pad for its entry level low-cost brand Datsun.

Nissan is the fastest growing exporter of cars from India, in a country where South Korean Hyundai Motor and Maruti Suzuki India are now the leading car exporters. Nissan exports have doubled to 1,00,909 cars in the last fiscal driven by strong demand for compact cars from Europe and Latin American markets.

Nissan began to export cars in 2010 from Chennai and currently ships 85% of its production to overseas markets. Its wholly-owned Indian subsidiary, Nissan Motor India (NMIPL), has now started shipping its sedan model Nissan Sunny after the huge success of its 'made in India' Micra hatchback, which is now sold in over 100 countries.

It exports fully-built cars such as Micra from Chennai, its strategic production hub for Africa, Europe and other Western markets. The company has now started exporting completely knocked down kits of its sedan, Sunny, to Egypt. These kits from India would be assembled by the local Nissan subsidiary abroad.

Speaking to ET, NMIPL Managing Director Takayuki Ishida said: "We have ambitious plans for India. Exports from India have been a huge success so far, and we want to increase it with new models, as trans-continental markets post stronger demand for smaller cars. We plan to increase our production to over four lakh cars, most of which would be meant for exports."

Currently, the company produces three lakh units under the Renault-Nissan global alliance joint plant in Chennai. About 85% of the production is meant to be exported to markets in Europe, Asia and Africa. It eventually aims to pip South Korean carmaker Hyundai as the largest exporter from India, which has shipped 2.37 lakh last fiscal.

"We are readying several markets to increase export of cars manufactured in India. We will also expand our product portfolio by launching several new cars. Many of these would be targeting overseas market and India could be the sole production centre in Asia," Ishida said.

Analysts say that many car companies in India have great potential to tap overseas markets. "India enjoys tremendous advantages of cost competitiveness due to cheaper labour. The added advantage of huge volumes enjoyed by Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki allow them to export more and take competitive advantage in overseas market. Likewise, Nissan also has a huge product portfolio and eventually would become a major player in exports market," said a Mumbai-based auto analyst with a brokerage firm.

Nissan is currently developing a small car of Rs 2-4 lakh to take on models such as Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon. Its manufacturing plant at Oragadam in Chennai would make Datsun cars for local and export markets, even as the company is considering a new factory to manufacture the new low-cost brand.

Datsun, expected to be a high-volume product targeting emerging economies, is expected to roll out by mid-2014. "We are developing the car keeping in mind the needs of emerging markets such as India, Brazil and Russia. The production base here is expected to meet the overseas demand for Nissan cars," Ishida added.

India: Daimler sees rising demand for optimised TCO

Quote:
Desmond Bubeck, Manager - Heavy Duty Engines at Daimler, states that the driving factors for the development of commercial vehicle engines for the Indian market include legislation, environment, customer demand and suppliers and competitors.

Localisation and customisation are the biggest challenges the company faces while developing engines, Bubeck said at Commercial Vehicle Megatrends India 2012.

With regard to the environmental aspect, one factor that plays a significant role is the quality of fuel in various markets - especially, the sulphur content in the fuel, Bubeck said.

In India specifically, the company sees rising customer demand towards optimised TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). One approach, he said, is that of higher initial cost, resulting in lower service cost over a period of time. One of the major drivers of TCO, according to Bubeck, is fuel economy. Daimler has taken the route of electronic engine management, optimising the injection system and optimising the charging system.
The German OEM said onboard diagnostics, extended service intervals and better engine brakes addressed the issue of maintenance cost. To deal with reliability and durability, Daimler's solution has been to rely on a robust engine design, simulation support and testing.

"Gas engines will play a more important role in the near future," Bubeck said. But for now though the company has decided to go with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology for its BharatBenz BS IV line for the Indian market.

Radialisation of tyres for trucks, buses shifts to higher gear

Quote:
KOCHI: Radialisation of tyres for heavy vehicles is gaining momentum in India, taking a cue from the West, with major tyre makers like Apollo, JK, CEAT and MRF ramping up capacities as customers demand better mileage and durability.

Almost all Indian cars run on radial tyres. Radial tyres had a 17% share of the heavy vehicles market in 2011-12 and this year the target is 24%, a level beyond which companies expect the trend to snowball.

In the US, China and Europe, up to 90% of trucks run on radial tyres.

In 2011-12, there was just 3% increase in radialisation in the truck and bus (T&B) segment. The tyre industry expects a 7% rise in the current year.

Tyre companies are increasing capacities to cash in on the trend.

JK Tyres, a pioneer in the field, has plants in Mysore and Chennai with a capacity to make 1.3 million tyres, which will be raised to 1.5 million.

"We are ahead of the industry as of our total T&B tyre production of 4 million per annum, around 33-35% are radials," said Swaranjit Singh, materials director of JK Tyres.

Apollo Tyres, another major player, expects to raise daily capacity at its Chennai plant to 6,000 radial T&B tyres by the third quarter from 4,000 now, said a company spokesman. Apollo Tyres has achieved 25% radialisation in the segment, above the industry average.

The obvious advantages of better mileage and durability and increased awareness seem to have tilted customer choice in favour of radials. Till 2011-12, the growth in radialisation in the T&B segment was about 2%. The advent of Chinese radials at cheaper rates, too, helped build awareness, though they were inferior to Indian radials.

"Indian radials are better suited to retreading than Chinese tyres," Swaranjit Singh said, a factor which can offset the threat from Chinese tyres.

Once radialisation reaches 25% level, it can progress fast, as seen in developed countries. "The quality has to be superior to achieve a higher growth rate. The quality requirement is higher than that of a passenger car. This is one of the reasons the tyre industry is going for imported rubber," said Rajiv Budhraja, director general of Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association.

He feels the quality of domestic rubber has to improve for better offtake. The recent campaign for quality improvement of sheet rubber held by the Rubber Board in Kottayam, where industry stakeholders met, could help.

Greaves Cotton plans to expand construction equipment, diesel engine range

Quote:
Chennai, April 27 (IANS) Expanding itse construction equipment product range with a technical tie-up with a Korean company and looking at different four-wheeler makers to power their vehicles with its diesel engines are some of the strategies that Greaves Cotton Ltd is now looking at, said a top company official Friday.

The multi-product company is also looking at newer applications for its diesel engines, and increasing localisation of its agricultural equipment.

"We have signed a technical tie-up agreement with Samil of (South) Korea to make construction equipments like boom pumps, stationary concrete pumps and others. It will take sometime for the company to roll out the new products for which the agreement with the Korean company has been signed," managing director and CEO Sunil Pahilajani told IANS here.

He said Greaves Cotton would now be able to offer the market technically superior products and grow this business in a major way competing with majors like Schwing Stetter and others.

Greaves Cotton rolls out construction equipment products like transit mixers, concrete pumps and batching plants out of its Gummidipoondi plant near here.

According to Pahilajani, there is a possibility of the Korean company sourcing the products from the company provided the quality parameters are met.

Meanwhile, Greaves Cotton is expanding its automotive diesel engines capacity to around 500,000 per annum from the current 390,000 units to meet the growing demand from three and four wheeler small commercial vehicle makers (passenger and goods carriers).

"The expansion at Aurangabad and Ranipet plant together involves an outlay of Rs.100 crore," Pahilajani said.

He said the company is now looking at the possibilities of supplying diesel engines for other kinds of vehicles like cars.

"We are exploring that avenue though nothing concrete has emerged. We have the capability to make diesel engines for cars," he added.

Not foreseeing any major problem for the company's diesel engine sales due to the slowing down of three wheeler segment, he said: "The segment is still growing only that the growth rate has come down. We are in three and four wheeler segment and looking at other avenues as well. That is our de-risking strategy."

"Our sales mix of automotive diesel engines will change. This year we expect 20 percent of our diesel engines going in for four wheelers and balance to three wheelers. The sales mix would change in the future and accordingly would our product mix," executive vice president and CFO A.K.Sonthalia told IANS.

In the automotive segment. Greaves Cotton is also present in tractors segment where its industrial engines are finding space.

BharatBenz trucks to roll out soon

Bangalore, May 3, 2012, DHNS :

Quote:
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), subsidiary of Germany’s Daimler AG, on Wednesday, announced its strategy to foray into the Indian market, with a total dedicated investment of over Rs 4,400 crore for the purpose.

DICV, whose products have already been displayed in the country earlier, will produce light, medium and heavy-duty commercial trucks in the 6 to 49-tonne range for the Indian volume market from the 3rd quarter onwards, under the brand name, ‘BharatBenz’.

“In the next couple of months, DICV will be rolling out a 25-tonne rigid truck, 25-tonne tipper truck and 31-tonne rigid truck. Going on, our aim is to launch vehicles on 17 different platforms, across numerous variants, in the next 18 to 20 months,” DICV Vice-President (Marketing & Sales, After Sales) V R V Sriprasad said, on the sidelines of BharatBenz Power Yatra roadshow near here.

Daimler has set up a sophisticated production plant at Oragadam, near Chennai, spread over 400 acre, with an instilled capacity of 36,000 units, in single shift, per annum. Sriprasad said that the company’s products will be developed with 85 per cent localised parts to reduce overall pricing, which would help handle competition. “By the end of this year, we plan to set up around 70 dealership locations in India and that number would go up to around 100 locations by next year,” he said.

The company also announced the setting up of BharatBenz Financial, a captive financier for the company’s trucks, offering fully integrated finance, insurance and maintenance contracts to customers.
