Schneider Electric has their operations in Bangalore (I think it is limited to back office work - not sure whether they manufacture in India)

GE bought Indo Tech transformers based in Thirumazhisai 2 years back. So they have a presence in Chennai although it is limited to manufacturing HT and LT transformers.

Other companies - I have no idea.

Their HO is in Gurgaon (I checked their website). The reason I thought their HO is in Bangalore was because I have received calls from their corporate office in Bangalore for their energy storage devices. Since I am in WB, I assumed they are based in Bangalore. Anyway, their RK Salai, Bangalore offices are branch offices (they have 15 offices throughout India).

Thumbs up Rapid growth projected in automotive sector

Industrialists projected rapid growth for the automotive sector, but tempered their expectations with the demand to address a set of challenges ranging from raising capital to infrastructure deficit.

Participants at the seminar on ‘Procurement of auto components from South India,' and a B2B session with a Japanese delegation hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), on Tuesday, showcased India as a viable partner for global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the automotive space with added emphasis to the unique strengths of the south, especially Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the meeting co-hosted by Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and the Automobile Components Manufacturers Association (ACMA), Harish Lakshman, Chairman, ACMA southern region, said India represented the world's second fastest growing economy, the seventh largest vehicle manufacturer and the third largest investor base. However, some of the challenges pertained to raising capital to meet growth trajectory in terms of high interest rates, scaling capacities ahead of demand, infrastructure deficit and logistics, insufficient levels of R&D and the lack of managerial depth, Mr. Lakshman said.

Projecting Tamil Nadu as one of the most investor-friendly States that accounted for 22 per cent of the gross auto output, Mr. Lakshman said its strengths included a robust supplier base, the presence of the largest Deming Prize Award winning companies outside Japan and availability of skilled manpower. The State government was very close to finalising the country's first-ever policy for the automotive sector.

R. Mahadevan, group technology director, India Pistons, said there was a mood of optimism in the automotive sector in the country. Making a pitch for the south, he pointed out that the Chennai-Hosur-Bangalore cluster accounted for 250 of the 728 component manufacturers and $27 billion of the $75 billion exports.

S.A. Sekaran, senior general manager-exports, Sundaram Fasteners, gave an overview of the TVS Group's foray into the auto component sector. Noriyasu Horita, deputy director, Overseas Trade Fair Division, JETRO, said the delegation of 17 Japanese companies participating in the procurement show at Delhi from February 10-12 were primarily looking for local suppliers, sourcing opportunities and trade partners.

Gayathri Sriram, former chairperson, Chennai Zone of CII-SR, Shinya Fuji, JETRO Director-General and Hiroshi Daikoku, senior investment advisor, JETRO Business Support Centre, Delhi, spoke.

not yet

.......
Sources say the locations shortlisted are based in the south, one near Chennai in Tamil Nadu and the other in a SEZ (Sri City) in Andhra Pradesh, which is again very close to Chennai. The company may zero in on the location near Chennai, joining the likes of Ford, Nissan-Renault, BMW and Ashok Leyland who are already invested in the region.

well first of all this peugeot has become "puli varudhu" kind of story. and even if it comes, frankly speaking it wont be contributing much if it is not in chennai. may be the residential areas of north chennai might see some activity but initially assuming that it invests bn, it will maximum employ 5000-8000 ppl. they will find residences in areas like gummidipoondi, ponneri, ennore etc. bt remember not all will reside in these areas. i think there are residential units coming up at sri city itself and most will prefer that rather than commuting to n fro from chennai

moreover it will mainly add revenues in form of taxes, due to people spending etc to AP govt. also they will pressure peugeot to use krishnapatnam port instead of ennore/chennai thereby indirectly curbing these two ports growth. u cant be always optimistic. we are not heavily congested and land deficient like mumbai to let them just go.(i know it depends on lobbying by officials of each state but if we get a chance we shud not let it go)... we have created a great ecosystem for automotive industry and if we let others take advantage of it then it will become the case of "pichai edutharam perumalu atha pudungunaram anumaaru".. apuram pinnadi feel panni prayojanam illa.. this might bring more and more companies to AP in future(read 'chennai will loose more n more of industries, employment opportunities and revenue to other states in future')

and for people being optimistic that it will indirectly benefit chennai, i can nly say two things. 1. nenapu dan pozhapa kedukum. 2. thanakku minji dhan dhaanamum dharmamum.. (dont take it in an offensive way, bt lets thick practically than being generous)

Just a small correction, the real wordings for the proverb you said are:

"Thanakkum minjinadhu dhaanam" our guys conveniently cut it short as "Thanakku minjinadu dhaanum". Its real opposite.

It highlights Dhaanam and Dharma are above Self (Ego)..

Thanks for this bit of information. Really a good piece of knowledge correction.

But I would like to keep the meaning as what i said though the proverb has a different original source.

Chennai will be world's largest auto-manufacturing hub: Stalin

Quote:
The setting up of production facilities by a global car maker, Indian auto group Mahindra and Mahindra and an Indonesian group is set to make the Chennai region the world's largest automobile manufacturing centre with a total capacity of 2.2 million vehicles per annum, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said Thursday.

"We are in the final stage of discussions with a global automobile major for setting up a car plant near Chennai with a capacity of 300,000 cars with an investment of Rs.4,000 crore," said Stalin inaugurating the Rs.2,100 crore Apollo Tyres factory near here.

He said Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) has decided to set up its 150,000 units per annum sports utility vehicle plant near here at an outlay Rs.1,800 crore.

Government officials told IANS the M&M plant is set to come at Cheyyur near here.

According to Stalin, a tractor plant and a tractor component plant is being set up by Sundareshwarar Alloys and Steels, a part of Indonesian group Texmaco, at Gangaikondan at an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore.

"With these Chennai region alone will have the production capacity of nearly 22 lakh (2.2 million) vehicles per annum making Chennai the No.1 automobile manufacturing centre in the world," Stalin said.

He said: "In tyre manufacturing also, we have succeeded in attracting major investments from companies like Michelin, JK Tyres, MRF, ATC and Apollo Tyres. The total installed capacity in tyre manufacturing in Chennai region is set to exceed 1,600 metric tonnes per day. This will make Chennai the largest tyre manufacturing centre in the country and one of the largest in the world."

Noting the research and development centres of Daimler, Renault-Nissan, Visteon, M&M and Ashok Leyland were located in the state, Stalin said Tamil Nadu is emerging as a knowledge-hub for the global automobile industry.

He said the state of the art automobile testing facility, NATRIP, being set up near here at an outlay of Rs.500 crore will be commissioned in September this year as 80 percent of the civil works have been completed.

Stalin also said the government is in the process of drafting a sector specific policy for automobiles which will contain many new initiatives from the government not only to attract new investments but also to improve the competitiveness of the existing units.

If I have to choose one, I would prefer Kia too as its fortunes are on the rise with hyundai backing rather than Puegot. Ofcourse I would prefer both to be in TN.

Smile Indonesian group to invest Rs 1000 cr for making tractors in TN

Indonesia's Polysindo Texmaco group is setting up a Rs 400-crore tractor manufacturing plant in Nilakottai in Dindigul district in southern Tamil Nadu.

Sundareshwara Alloy and Steel, part of the Indonesian group will also set up a tractor component manufacturing plant at Gangaikondan, in Tirunelveli district. The group is in talks with Tamil Nadu government for its new facilities. The proposed plants will come up with a cumulative investment of Rs 1,000 crore, MK Stalin, Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu, said while inaugurating Apollo Tyres plant in Oragadam, near Chennai.

Besides, a European car maker is in the final stages of negotiation for a Rs 4,000 crore plant with a capacity of 3 lakh cars a year, he said, without naming the company. It is learnt that Peugeot-Citroen is close to finalising its India plans and might locate its plant in Chennai.

Stalin said Mahindra and Mahindra is likely to enter into a MOU, with the state government for establishing a plant, with production capacity of 1.50 lakh cars and sports utility vehicles in Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district. This will entail an investment of Rs 1800 crore.

According to official estimates Chennai region alone will have production capacity of about 22 lakhs vehicles annually.

The construction work at the Apollo Tyres greenfield facility, was started in 2008 with an investment of Rs 520 crore which was since scaled up to Rs 2100 crore. The plant currently produces 7,000 passenger vehicle tyres and 1,300 commercial vehicle tyres a day.

Now I believe that Peugeot would setup their new plant here itself. I think Stalin had referred to Peugeot Citroen Deal previously
