Boo! Fake!

That waterway is nowhere near the centre of Telford! I've measured it from the Telford train station:

Let's compare to Shrewsbury in comparison:

You have to walk an incredible seventy times further to get to Telford's nearest waterway than you would have to walk from the centre of Shrewsbury to it's waterway. Telfordboy, you are hereby disqualified from talk of waterways
Silence you At no point did I claim that they were anywhere near the centre at I don't think the thread required them to be therefore I'm aware of no locational rule breaking so I think I'll stay right here.

If you wanted to be picky you could have debated whether Upper Furnace Pool counts as a waterway or not. Plus its in Coalbrookdale not Ironbridge so your coparison is slightly flawed

"Waterways" have to be "ways"... they can't just be a pond somewhere in somebody's garden! This thread's for rivers and canals, neither of which Telford has

Actually it has both, Upper Furnace is a legacy of the industrial rev, involving messing around with the Coal Brook. Its artificial but it still flows. Plus we still have remnants of the old canals, the most obvious bit would be part of the Trench Branch of the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal near Hadley. Get your maps out and take a look plus theres a bit at Blists Hill with a preserved inclined plane.

Oh and besides, the Severn flows within Telford's boundaries so there.

Ooh look at you and your old canals and coal brooks...

There's a river near Shrewsbury. Been staring at maps all day but can't quite find it...

I refuse to visit Blists Hill since they declined my summer-job application after I wrote on it "I can do a cracking farmer's accent and always look good dressed up"

They probably didn't think it was a serious job application, but I was never going to be a serious employee so I don't really care. I got the lifeguard job which involved a key to the pool (ie gherkin's pool parties) so that was a good use of summer

Don't forget Shrewsbury has a canal too! A pretty decrepit one but hopefully it will be restored in the next few years. I sometimes ride my bike along it out of town towards Haughmond Hill.

I've never seen that canal in real life! I'd completely forgotten there was one!

Doesn't it go down near the old Flax Mill in Ditherington? I hope they restore it.

The Thames Estuary counts as a waterway for my hometown - if you look carefully you can just about see the other side!

I think you all need to see a real waterway, one which serves a purpose and has done for centuries, which is always filled with activity and life as opposed to what most here appear to be - dead space which are nice to look at and walk along but serve little other purpose.

Even some of the seemingly busier waterways like the canals around gas street basin in Birmingham have very little actual boat activity on them in my experience. Even the Thames has surprisingly little traffic on it other than tourist boats and the Thames clippers. Essentially in most places waterways are wasted resources which could be much better utilised.

Portsmouth harbour however not only serves as the principle base for most of the Royal Navies surface fleet but also ferries to the continent and the Channel islands, both passenger and car ferries to the Isle of Wight, commercial docks through which 70% of the bananas eaten in Britain are imported along with 10,000 pallets of kiwifruit a year, BAE shipbuilding (previously VT then BVT), a thriving fishing industry and of course a major centre of leisure boating including three of the biggest marinas in the UK alongside a great number of smaller marinas and boat yards.

Queens Harbour Master Portsmouth deal with 117,000 shipping movements yearly and this figure does not include trawlers, pleasure boats or the harbour tour boats etc.

Basically I think the harbour really is the heart of this city whereas in other places (and im thinking of Liverpool, Cardiff, Southampton and even London here) their principle waterways feel more peripheral and less like important functional parts of the city.

heres two fantastic pictures from Jainbow on flickr.

And a few more from www.doverpast.co.uk also on flickr

Our roof dormer really looks out of place in that last one...
Anyway, you have captured the heart of Portsmouth well, and non pompodians, don't forget we have another harbour on the other side of the city Connected by in the north by Portscreek, making Portsmouth an island.
