There actually are roads there, as this 1842 painting shows...

Sure but living 3m from it at the same height, seems a bit risky - weren't flooding a problem back then - it sure was in Denmark ( and still is in the western parts with strong winds )

I guess coastal Danes isn't half as masters in hard living as coastal Norwegians is when even the bad weather in western Denmark is half as bad as in coastal Norway!

Rough as the Norwegians may be, living under water has to be an unsustainable solution in the long run

I would think that the storms would fill up the fjords hence raise the water levels to above the normal ground level thus flodding the area..

Fjords are unseparated from the ocean, so no. That wouldn't happen.

Ssshh!! You don't want to ruin his Danish childhood believes of Limfjorden, which actually isn't a real fjord! It's like telling a child that Santa Claus doesn't exists!

I guess these villages mainly lived off fishing and they wanted to live close to their boathouses. They are shielded by the worst of nature by being tucked away in some fjord. A storm wouldnt raise waves by that much in these protected circumstances, nor is the tide much of a problem in these parts of the world. That would be guess for why the villages could be so close to the water

And for quality, here are some larger exemples of the photochromes showing how good these 'pictures' actually are.

As i said in the post where i start with Finland, "I will rename this thread now since i found some more photochromes." So please give me a few seconds to call Swede so he can change the title ASAP before more forumers tell me i am all wrong about what is Scandinavia and so on!

But thanks for reminding me about journey, been a bad habit since school i guess.

You can find them in this archive: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pgzhtml/pgzabt.html

But its really messy in there, many of the photchromes haven't been scanned yet either, and some are of really poor quality. All avaliable photochromes from N&B countries have been posted in this thread now. If you want to see loads of others from Europe and USA (some pics from Middel East and Russia) you can search in that page.
