Thank you sir! You have a pretty interesting job and work in a beautiful neighbourhood! Glad you enjoyed the pictures! Thank you for the information, and I will definitely take up that hint about going to the Museum of Point-à-Caillère!

Great pictures, as always, Taller. It's amazing how different Montreal is in the winter and the summer but I think it's great any time of the year.

agreed. In winter people should still go and visit.. bring sensible and very warm clothing but the city is beautiful in the snow!

Nice shot of the Notre Dame church, I was there last October and got a nasty parking ticket just down the street from there too.

Same in Toronto. The slush and the salt spray over it almost immediately.

Excellent photos! Absolutely love spending winter's in Quebec - it has such an interesting mix of European charm with colonial Canadiana

Lovely photos, Taller/Better. Your threads are always ones I greatly enjoy looking at. It's like a mini-vacation!

I'm off to Montreal next week with some friends for Nuit Blanche and I'm really looking forward to seeing it first-hand!

More Montreal pictures from this past weekend! Early spring is a bleak, dirty time of year in much of Canada, so bear in mind some of these pictures are going to look a little desolate. Very soon the grass will be green and flowers will be blooming! First some pictures from a little walk I took from the gay village to downtown on Rue Ste Catherine ( a distance of about a couple or so kilometres).

I usually have a meal at this Middle Eastern restaurant:

Berri Park:

This has always been my favourite building in that area, and just love the grandeur
of the entrance way. Sadly it is now empty:

I lucked out this particular Sunday, and happened to encounter the annual
St Patrick's Day Parade! The oldest continuous Paddy's Day Parade and surely one of the biggest in North America. Those pics are up next!!

I worked my way through the crowds, and managed to find myself a wonderful little perch to watch the fun. I hope you enjoy these pictures and can feel some of the exuberance of the day!

I was surprised at the number of Cheerleader squads:

Place des Arts, Montreal's premiere concert hall:

Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, built, I believe, in the early 1960's:

I believe a condo is going up next door:

The Hyatt hotel across the street:

more cheerleaders, or else they are catching a girl who has fallen from a plane!

The Police Academy!

the surging crowd after the end of the parade:

don't ask.....

I'll make another few entries!

I love this old guy. He has sat for many years in front of Oglivy's and played the spoons, which is an old time tradition of Quebec.

the Apple Store

Home of the Grey Nuns:

I wish buildings could be detailed like this today:

as you can imagine, by this time Taller, Better was FAMISHED and parched, so stopped
by at the Bar B Barn for a mess o' ribs. This restaurant opened for Expo 67, and hasn't changed a bit in the past 42 years... it is like stepping into the past!!

next time I will just order the half rack, as it was too big a meal.... but I took the
rest home and they made a great snack later:

thusly fortified, I felt strong enough to venture out for some more pictures. Here is the
Gare Windsor, or Windsor Station... one of Montreal's old train stations. Built in the1880's, this handsome building seems to be struggling to find a purpose in modern day society. At the moment it seems vastly under-used:

Let's go in!

the main hall is very attractive, and in a surprisingly "modern" style for such an old
building. In the 1880's architects where experimenting with new uses of iron, and the resulting barrel vault ceiling is both attractive and sensible in letting in so much natural light:

a World War One memorial statue:

and then back outdoors:

This church, the 1870 St George's, is easy to spot from a distance as Anglican, because of its traditional English countryside style:

the exceedingly handsome 1931 Sun Life Building, one of my favourite office buildings in the city:

Canada Park:

and the magnificent Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde, which is the seat of the
the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Montreal. It was built as a half sized model of
Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, in a deliberate move to distinguish itself from other Neo-
Gothic churches that were popular at the time. The cornerstone was laid in 1870 and the church was opened as "Saint-James Cathedral" or "St James the Greater" in 1894.

the 13 statues on top represent the patron Saints of the parishes of Montreal that contributed to building the cathedral:

I'll show the stunning interior shots in further entries... perhaps tonight or tomorrow.

This photo of the Sun Life building was one of my favourite shots of the weekend:

I've more photos than I realized... so will add more in the next day or so. I am hoping you are enjoying my tour so far, and will check out the rest of my pictures!

The construction next to Place des Arts is le Quartier des spectacles I think.

Nice pictures. I hope you got some pictures of the inside of the cathedral; I'm interested in seeing what that looks like.

Is this going to be a rolling thread like your Toronto thread?
