RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- A World Cup stadium being built in the isolated Brazilian state of Amazonas may not become a white elephant after all. At least one judge in the area has come up with a post-World Cup use: a prisoner processing center.

Brazil is readying 12 stadiums for next year's World Cup, and several - including the new stadium in Manaus - will be little used after the tournament. FIFA and Brazilian officials were the subject of widespread protests three months ago during the Confederations Cup, a warm-up for the World Cup.

Millions took to the streets to protest spending billions on sports events in a country with poor public services, high taxes and stark social inequality. Brazil is spending an estimated $3.5 billion on stadiums for the World Cup, part of a total of $13.3 billion for related infrastructure needed to host soccer's biggest event.

Spending on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics will be similar. Alvaro Corado, spokesman for the Amazonas state court system, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Judge Sabino Marques had proposed a novel idea.

''He would, perhaps, suggest to the government of the state of Amazonas that the stadium be used as a processing center for prisoners after the World Cup,'' Corado said, quoting Marques. Marques is also the president of a group that monitors the prison system in the state.

The new 44,000-seat stadium in Manaus, being built at a cost of $275 million, will host only four World Cup matches. The city of 2.3 million has no team in Brazil's first or second division, and little soccer tradition. The potential for building white elephants is similar for three other new stadiums: in the capital Brasilia, in Cuiaba in the southwest, and in Natal in the northeast.

FIFA requires only eight stadiums for the World Cup, but Brazil decided to have 12 - under pressure from politicians who used the construction projects to provide jobs and political loyalty. Brazilian Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo has defended the legacy of the stadiums as ''centers for sports and non-sports events'' and has suggested they would be places for conventions, shows and fairs.

Other Brazilians officials have said cities will need to be creative to find uses for the stadiums. Jose Maria Marin, the president of the Brazilian Football Federation, said earlier this year that finding uses for some stadiums after the World Cup will ''all depend on the creativity, the imagination of the owners and the operators of these stadiums. It will depend on the imagination of each leader.''

Really I think the issue with stadiums like Manaus and Brasilia highlights the issue that the WC as a whole should be most concerned with. That is getting fans into the habit of attending matches rather than watching on TV.

I'm guessing the reason neither city has a high profile club is that the recent immigrant population have brought in(or are following their parents) support of the tradisional big east coast sides. If your just watching on TV then theres no reason to change(or support 2 sides), offering a high quality local stadium is more of a reason to though.

"Rumble in the jungle" may be a good slogan for WC matches in Manaus.

Is it really going to be a prison after the WC? Or is j-it just an idea?

Would be sad because it's a very good stadium!

No...
The problem people only read the Head lines of a news.
It was just a stupid sugestion a promotor did, not to be a prison, but just a temporary place for them. But they already denied this stupid sugestion.
It won´t be a jail.
Manaus its a capitol. And like all capitols of the planet deserves its own stadium.

u have a lot of patience for that. Every country that is home to major events during the preparation Receives much criticism, most sensationalist. If we stop to answer every ridiculous news, we'll just have to stop living.

Note that in Brazil it is still more complicated, because both the local press, politicians and other authorities, as well as foreign tabloids always seek to self-promote on top of the big events. This is what else happens. It is natural, nothing more.

And it will not stop, other news will arise, either here or in another country in the crosshairs of media events.

Of course this does not hide the problems serious that Brazil still has, but the major events are there to help in this process in one way or another. The events will happen and will be a great success, the best and the biggest. So I do not know for what so much noise around it, if not for self-promotion ...

All the problems have already been shown, there's no way disguise or conceal and this is not the intention of the country, just because it is a democratic country and we live in an era where information is absolutely computerized, rotating at a speed unimaginable.

There are countries where it has not consolidated democracy and biggest problems happen, even in major events and nothing is disclosed because they have closed regime. The international press has not even access. In Brazil the local press takes care to disclose everything.

Brazil is fulfilling all the commitments and will host a big world cup.

Greetings...

it´s gonna be the most beautiful stadium in Brazil... and why not in the world? But it´s good not only because they are building a massive stadium like that, it´s been noticeable all the improvements the manauense government has been doing in the city, like buinding many houses, exterminating "favelas" near the rivers, etc...
