Thai TV show pipped at post by UK series Lharn Poo Koo E-Joo misses out on Emmy

Bangkokpost Published: 25/11/2009

The nomination of Thai TV show Lharn Poo Koo E-Joo for an International Emmy award in the Children and Young People Category has drawn a blank.

The prize, announced in New York on Monday, went to the United Kingdom.

Last month, the Thai reality show, produced by Workpoint Entertainment, was nominated for the first time for the final round on the Emmy stage with three other competitors - Dustbin Boy from the United Kingdom, The Little Emperor's Christmas from Brazil, and Mille from Denmark.

Workpoint president Panya Nirunkul, who attended the ceremony, said even though his programme missed out on the award - the most coveted prize for TV producers across the world - a gold medal and certificate had been presented to it as it had competed in the final round.

"At the ceremony, we were welcomed by loud applause from all participants ... which made us feel impressed," he said.

Lharn Poo Koo E-Joo has been nominated for the 2009 Asian Television Awards in the Best Game or Quiz Programme and Best Children's Programme categories for two consecutive years. Mr Panya won Best Entertainment Presenter and Nong Cha-Cha-Cha's Chusak Iamsuk won Best Comedy Performance.

The awards will be announced at the 2009 Asian Television Awards Gala Dinner in Singapore on Dec 3.

Britain walked away with five International Emmy Awards on Monday, including for best performances, while Brazil joined the television elite for the first time at a gala ceremony in New York.

British entries led the pack, with the Best Actor gong going to Ben Whishaw for his role as Ben Coulter in Criminal Justice.

The Best Actress award was won by Julie Walters for playing Dr Anne Turner in A Short Stay In Switzerland.

British TV programmes also cornered the International Emmy awards in Arts Programming, Children and Young People, and Documentary categories.

Brazil, which had a list of nominations second only to that of British entries, made history with a first ever award for the telenovella India - A Love Story.

Awards also went to previous Emmy-winning countries Denmark, which won the Drama Series category for The Protectors; Japan in Comedy for Hoshi Shinichi's Short Shorts; the Netherlands in Non-scripted with The Phone; and Germany in TV Movie Mini-series with The Wolves Of Berlin.

I'm pretty sure that the sequel of the Hangover will be filmed in Thailand
But, I don't know how the Thais gonna react to the content that will be in the movie
though, cause it probably is going to focus on our dark side. lol anyways I love the movie
no matter what.

I saw her audition clip, and I think she is really talented. She can really sing and also has good look. I think she should try to audition for The Star, KPN, or AF instead of this cheap korean girl group. What a waste...

Oliver Stone speaks at FCCT

Bangkokpost Published: 26/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

US film director Oliver Stone, in Bangkok to deliver a pair of keynote speeches about world peace, says we are all living in "a dark time - darker than anything I've ever known in my 60-plus years".

It is our collective responsibility to "restore decency to this terrifying world", he told the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand last night as part of the Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace programme, organised by the International Peace Foundation.

In his 25-minute speech, "Film-making and Peace-Building", Stone recalled pivotal moments in history, from the hysteria against Communism when he was young, to Wall Street's stock madness in the 1980s.

He discussed the two Iraq wars, the "lynch mob" mentality after the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and how "an immature president [turned that event] into political advantage".

Stone emphasised the need to be realistic and "to think about the positive and not give in too easily to the negative."

Stone has directed over 20 films since he launched his career in 1971.

His work often delivers a strong, sometimes controversial political message, such as the movies Nixon, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Commandante (in which he interviewed Fidel Castro), W (about the life of George WBush), and South of the Border (a documentary about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez).

His historical epic Alexander was partly shot in Thailand.

"I won't give up believing that movies can help express the best in us, to light candles in this darkness," he said.

He added that a blockbuster film like James Cameron's Avatar could help create a better world.

"I hope that [Avatar] is crawling into the unconscious of the world," he said. Popular films with a strong message can work subversively as "guerrillas of the mind". Movies can show us "how things can be", Stone said.

Yesterday the director gave a speech at the New International School of Thailand and then met up with Thai stars Mario Maurer, Marsha Wattanapanich and Sukrit "Bie" Wisetkaew.

Stone's next film, slated for release later this year, is Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. It stars Shia LaBeouf and Michael Douglas.

US film director Oliver Stone, centre, talks with actresses Natthaweeranuch Thongmee, left, and Marsha Wattanapanich at the Dusit Thani Hotel where he was keynote speaker for the ‘‘Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace’’ series. AFP

Keep in mind that this movie is so going to focus on the 'dark side' of Thailand. Haha.
