Damn, that is an extensive awesome stream of photos. I loved the Old Stadium, I miss that place.

yeah, the stadium was so much better than the united center it's not even funny. remember how ear-piercingly loud it used to get in that madhouse? the united center is a veritable library by comparison.

Damn, kinda sad looking through those photos. I wasn't old enough to truly appreciate the old Chicago Stadium, but I remember going to a hand full of Bulls Games there

CATOE has a writeup on the organ in the old barn and Bill Wirtz's refusal to move it or install a new one in the UC.

There was nothing redeeming about that man. Total dick.

Losing the Chicago Stadium was the worst thing that has ever happened to the Chicago Blackhawk franchise. Well that said they [Blackhawks] did many terrible things like not broadcasting games on TV and losing a generation of future youthful fans... But...

In the day the Chicago Stadium was a very intimidating place to play for an opponent.

It was the loudest sporting arena that I have ever been to in my life, second place goes to the Rollerdome in MN. They said you could see the dust flying off the raffters as the decibels peaked.

The national anthem was worth the ticket price alone.

Yea, when I was a kid and went to games with my pops it made me feel a bit like I was part of the big guys club. It seems to me games were less of a family atmosphere back then. I even loved the small corridors where you were herded like cattle and bumping into everybody. The red walls. The ladies dressed to the nines especially during Hawks game. A haze that seemed to hang in the air a lot of the time. The entrance which felt like you were walking into a den of elegance and decadence at the same time. The Canadian Club organ taking up its own section. The upper deck which made you feel like you were peering down right onto the floor.

Did the balconies at Chicago Stadium have any restroom or concession facilities?

Of course they did, they were just a third of the size as the current ones and had a rather pungent smell to them. Still, I loved roaming the corridors of the old stadium with its red walls and the smoke that lingered in the halls. Every night felt like you were going to a depression era prize fight.

I'm not talking about the arena as a whole, just the 2 balcony levels.
Watching old Bulls games, there doesn't seem to be a lot of room. It looks like the last rows of the balconies nearly sit flush with the exterior wall of the arena. I assumed it took a while to exit the arena. There were no escalators or elevators at Chicago Stadium, were there?

I was in my yute when the Chicago Stadium was around so my recollection may be off but I believe you are right in that there were no escalators or elevators as far as I can remember. I also think other you are correct in terms of the no bathrooms/concessions being up on the upper level. There may have been a few makeshift concession carts in the upper level but I'm not even sure they had that. You had to at the least walk down to the second level and perhaps even first level in order to get to the bathrooms/concessions.

Unlike the arenas of today, no one would confuse Chicago Stadium with the Boston Garden, although I've read that Chicago Stadium was maintained much better.

Well, looks like the only tenant in UC this fall will be the Blackhawks. Lost revenues...
