Changi set to see 50m passengers by 2014

SINGAPORE: Changi Airport Group said passenger traffic at Changi Airport is expected to exceed 50 million by 2014.

Current passenger traffic stands at 42 million.

Passenger movements grew from 30 million to 40 million in six years, from 2004 to 2010.

Changi Airport is ranked the seventh busiest airport for international traffic.

The others are London Heathrow Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Hong Kong International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Frankfurt Airport and Amsterdam Schipol.

The group said it is looking at four main thrusts to achieve this target.

One of it is to continue to enhance the Changi experience for passengers.

For example, the iChangi application was launched last year to allow users to obtain the latest flight updates on the go.

It also aimed to leverage on new tourism products such as the Gardens by the Bay and the Singapore International Cruise Terminal.

Discussions with various airline partners, both foreign and Singapore based carriers, are also underway.

For example, after trade shows were carried out to promote traffic flow between Singapore and Turkey in both directions, Turkish Airlines has upped their services from five to seven weekly.

With the significant growth of low—cost carriers (LCC), the group said "it won’t come as a surprise" if it would make up about 30—35 per cent of the total market share in the next five years.

Currently, LCCs account for about 22 per cent of passenger traffic at Changi Airport.

Changi Airport Group air hub development executive vice—president Yam Kum Weng said: "If you look at the experience in Europe, the LCC growth can be as much as 30 per cent of market share.

"So we do see the LCCs playing an important part in achieving our target".

But the group said the target will be re—looked if faced with various challenges such as increasing fuel prices and natural disasters.

Other challenges include geopolitical shocks and the weak global economic environment.

The group also said it hopes to strengthen its global network by collaborating with key partners.

"The pace that we’re looking at for growth is stronger than our historical average," Mr Yam said.

"We will strengthen our connectivity to points in China and India, in particular the secondary cities where there’s a lot of potential for growth, and also to long—haul markets like Europe, US and Russia".

SATS unveils new brand identity
Posted: 07 June 2011 2035 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore-listed airport gateway services and food solutions provider SATS has unveiled its new brand identity.

SATS said the new monolithic brand identity flows with its global aspiration and commitment to customers, with a red background symbolising warmth with customer relations.

The group's roots began in ground handling and airline catering in Singapore. It now has the largest gateway services and aviation food solutions network in Asia and is present in 35 airports in ten countries.

SATS has expanded its food solutions business to the UK and Australia and said a new brand strategy is aligned with its strategic decision to grow its business globally.

The group said it is on the lookout for acquisitions and is looking increase the component of its non aviation related revenues in Singapore by around 5 per cent. Non-aviation related business currently accounts for roughly 18 per cent of business.

SATS said the new brand identity is about raising service standards and adding value to its partners.

Changi Airport's third ground handling licence awarded to ASIG
By Linette Lim | Posted: 09 June 2011 1148 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Changi Airport Group (CAG) has awarded a third ground handling licence to US-based Aircraft Service International Group (ASIG).

ASIG beat three other firms to win the tender.

With the ten-year licence, ASIG will be able to provide passenger and cargo handling services to some 100 airlines operating at Changi Airport.

These services are currently provided by two agents - SATS and Changi International Airport Services (CIAS).

Changi Airport Group says a third ground handler will provide airlines with potential benefits in price and range of offerings.

The previous third ground handler at Changi Airport was Swissport, which pulled out in 2009 after four years of operations.

Although Swissport reportedly caused ground handling rates at Changi Airport to fall by 15 per cent, the Swiss company chalked up losses of S$50 million.

Siva Govindasamy, Flightglobal's Asia managing editor, said: "Some would argue that there really isn't a market for a third ground handler in Singapore, ASIG and Changi tend to disagree. Airlines would welcome competition. But it still remains to be seen whether this will drive down costs substantially."

Analysts say it is unlikely that ASIG will make a dent in the market share of the two existing ground handlers. This is because many of the carriers are tied to long term contracts, either with SATS or CIAS.

Siva Govindasamy said: "The key to it would be for ASIG to try to get a few of the airlines, whose contracts with the incumbents might be expiring, on board. But it will be imperative for them to get a big airline, with a reasonable amount of frequency into Changi, into its portfolio."

But analysts say one factor that might work in ASIG's favour is that the airline industry seems to be picking up, unlike Swissport whose stint at Changi Airport coincided with a slump in air travel brought on by the financial crisis in 2008.
