Roman masonry, probably part of Apulum camp's Principia, discovered by archaeologists

Elements of Roman masonry that may belong to the headquarters (Principia) of the Apulum camp have been discovered under Alexandru Sterca Sulutiu Street of Alba Iulia (central Romania), during the archaeological assistance works for the rehabilitation of the Alba Carolina Fortress.

Alba Iulia National Museum of the Union Deputy Director General Constantin Inel announced that three lines of walls belonging to some interior compartments were discovered, probably a part of the eastern side of the landmark, as well as two building elements of the entrance to Principia, represented by two access pillars of the building's gate. The vestiges were discovered at a one-metre-and-a-half depth, right under the street roadway, during the works on the sewerage system, on the eastern side of the Custozza Park.

'These structures have been archaeologically and topographically registered, the sewerage pipe having been placed under these structures, by specific techniques of digging under, and the walls have been subsequently covered with layers of sand and ballast for primary preservation, until a decision is made on the research and exploitation of these highly important archaeological sites for the camp of Apulum,' Constantin Inel said.

According to him, the discoveries back up once more the argument in favour of this building being researched, for its high importance to the planimetry and architecture of the Roman camp of Apulum. Therefore these vestiges will be a reference point in the organization of archaeological research works for uncovering the Roman camp headquarters of the 13th Legion Gemina.

The Roman camp of Apulum was the largest in Roman Dacia, its building beginning most probably during the rule of emperor Hadrian. For over one century continuously Apulum was the headquarters of the 13th Legion Gemina.

Superbe poze, bgp. Alba Iulia pare gata sa intre in clubul Sibiu, orase cu nota 10 la amenajare urbana.

The Orthodox Cathedral was still open at 10 p.m. and there were quite a few tourists visiting it. A thing to appreciate.

Also, an interesting thing that I've noticed is that on the northern side of the fortress the newly planted vegetation is mostly coniferous, while in the rest it's deciduous.

Nu stiu cata lume are habar, dar in Catedrala Romano-Catolica Sfantul Mihail este inmormantat Iancu de Hunedoara. Multa lume trece pe acolo si din pacate intra doar la Catedrala Ortodoxa.

Stalpii aia de iluminat nu se ridica la inaltimea monumentalitatii constructiilor din jur. Sper ca-n timp sa fie schimbati cu ceva potrivit, si sper sa reconstruiasca cate ceva din Castrul Roman.
