That's Belgrade

But we all hope that will change soon.

Nice pics. Belgrade seems to have a lot of buildings that look as though they were built between WW1 and WW2, a period I like.

Great pictures of a great city!

The city clearly has many many buildings with a very outspoken architectural style. There are two-storey houses which almost look Austro-Hungarian. There are wonderfully decorated art-nouveau buildings, like the one whith the United Colours of Benetton shop. There are countless beautiful art-deco buildings, which I guess is also what geoff189d refers to. There avenues offering great views, like from Terazije to the St. Sava Church.

And then, there's the setting of the city. Which other city has, right in the city centre, such a huge park, with such a long history, with such nice views? And then, the left Sava shore is very nice as well, with the promenade and restaurants in Zemun and the party scene further south.

And the photo's in this thread capture all those things right as they are. Great job!

I've only visited the city "by accident" this summer, underway without knowing what to expect, and I was totally surprised. In a positive sense.

Belgrade is a sleeping giant that's waking up.
This will be one of my next destinations.

Bravo, Rascian! Svaka čast!

Great photos!

Belgrade is certainly a big mix of everything, above all a great architectural mix.
After the liberation from the Turks in 1868 it started to develope into a european town ( first) and then it became a city. From one-two storey 1870-1890 houses following Austro-Hungarian historicism styles school, to the art-nouveau buildings especially the one built in the national ( serbo-byzantian ) variant of the style..
Then architects started to find inspiration in the Paris beaux-art school of architecture. After 1 world war many Tzarist Russians came to Belgrade as emigrants from the Soviet Union, among them many architects who brought with them the Russian academic tradition in architecture. And also art-deco and international modernism buildings started to raise in Belgrade, with it's climax in the 1930' and the birth of the so-called Belgrade moderna ( one sort of decorative modernism typical for this city)...
After WW2 came the communist and they made a sometimes controversial but important contribution to the city...

As a result Belgrade can look quite messy... 5 buildings- 5 different styles, concepts, facade materials.
It's hard to find two buildings of the same style next to each other, on the other hand that's what gives some heterogeneity and dynamic to the city.. almost every street has some sort of distinct character.
Belgrade is a constant battle beautiful against ugly.

The worst side of Belgrade are some areas in the very center that are a disaster and still waiting to be defined urbanistically , like the riverside, or the Slavia square... add to that a couple of 10.000 facades waiting to be restored..

But I guess things are improving, but to slowly ...

.. and I forgot, thanks for the comments

Thanks for the explanation on the architectural styles!

Personally, I don't find Belgrade "messy". I happen to like such mixtures of different styles. And in Belgrado the buildings do fit together somehow, because adjacent buildings mostly are of about the same size and height and have the same alignment.

(For example, from what I saw, the Austro-Hungarian-style buildings with only two floors seemed to be nicely clustered together)

He was talking about art-deco style buildings, not about buildings in generally

Btw Rascian, we want more!

Fantastic thread!

Are individual houses common in Belgrade (and the urban area)? Or do most people live in apartments.
