It was never specified how many rooms the old Hotel de Mexico had, but I'm pretty sure the number is larger than that of the Nikko Mexico City Hotel

No such 'big' hotels in Metro Manila boasting of a thousand rooms or more. Those with rooms in excess of 500 are considered big already but not necessarily the best:

Makati Shangrila Hotel -- 699 rooms
Edsa Shangrila Hotel -- 632 rooms
Sofitel Philippine Plaza -- 609 rooms
Mandarin Oriental Hotel -- 550 rooms
Dusit Thani Hotel -- 538 rooms
Manila Pavilion Hotel & Casino -- 502 rooms
Manila Hotel -- 500 rooms
Manila Diamond Hotel -- 500 rooms

Best rated: Manila Peninsula Hotel -- 498 rooms

In Metro Cebu:

Waterfront Cebu Hotel & Casino -- 561 rooms
Mactan Shangrila Resort & Spa -- 547 rooms

Best rated: Plantation Bay Resort & Spa -- 256 rooms

Just because a hotel is the "best rated" doesn't mean it's the best. Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental, and Shangri-La all of the highest of standards, you cant go wrong staying at any of them.

I'm not sure if the Othon Palace with 554 rooms is the largest in Rio de janeiro, but if some forumber from Brazil would help me find out, then that user is welcome to do so.
