I like it. As a Southern, university town, it's got a little bit of everything. Unless you're an overstimulated, big-city type, I would think just about anybody could be happy there, regardless of political views.

One unique aspect of Athens is the way the downtown runs right up against the campus, which of course adds a lot of synergy to the downtown.

Athens is neat. The home of REM and the B52s. The Bulldogs are kind of overrated, but the actual university is definitely underrated.

UGA has the best looking women in the entire country. So I've heard.

I'll be making my first trip there when LSU plays UGA in football this coming football season 2009.

Geaux Tigers!

late late late reply - it is a decent downtown area. Typical good ole boy hangouts as well as hippies and townies mixed in for flavour.
Bars are plentiful, some good restaurants, not many dance clubs (if you're into euro-style partying, probably not your best bet).

Downtown is one of the greatest college towns ever...outside of that, not much to look at, tho the greenway/river walk area is pretty. Some of the coolest, smartest and nicest folks and if you like psychedelic rock, it's one of the few Places in the world where it's en vogue....I mean even the frat boys are listening to it there!
