I like it. As a Southern, university town, it's got a little bit of everything. Unless you're an overstimulated, big-city type, I would think just about anybody could be happy there, regardless of political views.

One unique aspect of Athens is the way the downtown runs right up against the campus, which of course adds a lot of synergy to the downtown.

Athens is neat. The home of REM and the B52s. The Bulldogs are kind of overrated, but the actual university is definitely underrated.

UGA has the best looking women in the entire country. So I've heard.

I'll be making my first trip there when LSU plays UGA in football this coming football season 2009.

Geaux Tigers!

late late late reply - it is a decent downtown area. Typical good ole boy hangouts as well as hippies and townies mixed in for flavour.
Bars are plentiful, some good restaurants, not many dance clubs (if you're into euro-style partying, probably not your best bet).

Downtown is one of the greatest college towns ever...outside of that, not much to look at, tho the greenway/river walk area is pretty. Some of the coolest, smartest and nicest folks and if you like psychedelic rock, it's one of the few Places in the world where it's en vogue....I mean even the frat boys are listening to it there!

Love how the SAE house sticks out in this picture. I was raised here and I've never seen the angle of downtown. Fun fact, if you highlighted all of the bars in this picture, over half the screen would be yellow!

Just spent a weekend there with a very special lady. I'll probably be moving there in a matter of months if not sooner. Downtown is very vibrant and I love the way it abuts the campus. Very unique in that respect. And of course my girlfriend lives in an old Victorian house. Everything is lining up for Athens.

It looks bigger than I expected.

I've never heard anything but praise about it.

Lots of wonderful older homes around the Classic City. Would it happen to be near the 5 points area?

It's on Boulevard, very close to downtown. It's a National Historic District.

To me, Athens is like a southern version of Ann Arbor. A college town where the college and downtown literally blend into one another. That gives its downtown a vibe that many larger cities still lack.

I've gone to Athens several times to play soccer. It's got a cool downtown environment and nice natural surroundings (especially during the fall). Of course UGA has a large effect on the community. It's linked well with Atlanta as well.
