Just some News for now .....will post more stuff when I have Time ...

Rduced Qantas flights 'okay'

06.01.2009
By JULIE TAYLOR Local tourism industry leaders are optimistic reduced Qantas jet services between Rotorua and Christchurch are only a temporary measure.

Weekend services between the two cities will stop on January 24 as the airline reduces its timetable around the country but Agrodome director Warren Harford said it was a positive that the five weekday services remained untouched.

"This is no reflection on what is happening in Rotorua in terms of development. It's a sign of the times and the way the industry is at the moment."

He told The Daily Post many tourism firms were making cutbacks and it was a sign of Rotorua's strength as a tourist destination that there had been only minimal changes to flights in and out of the city's airport.

"I would think it is just a short-term situation. Qantas is very committed to Rotorua and in our business, it is anticipated that mid-2009 will see a swing back."

In the meantime, Mr Harford said the focus should be on encouraging those people who were travelling to spend as much of their time and money in Rotorua as possible. "What we need to do is work out how to grab their money before they spend it in other centres," he said.

A Qantas spokesman said the company, which reduced flights around Australia last year, would continually review all aspects of its business in light of current market conditions.

Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing assistant general manager Ruth Crampton said international visitors were more likely to be affected by the changes than domestic travellers.

"That service very much meets international markets. These markets are currently in decline so it makes sense to tailor services accordingly."

Mrs Crampton said Qantas brought a lot of international travellers to New Zealand and on to Rotorua through Australia so the cuts were "disappointing but understandable".

Weekend travel between Rotorua and Christchurch is still possible with Air New Zealand operating three or four direct flights a day, seven days a week.

Rotorua Airport Ltd chairman Neil Oppatt said he did not expect the cuts to affect Rotorua's chances of picking up transtasman services when the current runway extensions were completed.

Mr Oppatt said Qantas' budget airline Jet Star was bringing new services into New Zealand and he expected it would pick up some routes currently covered by Qantas

We think alike BBOff28 ....very frustrating ....

I blame the Tauranga City Council , they are spending Money on things like $ 10m for the Hot Pools when they should be trying to get an international Hotel Chain in the CBD ........Rotorua is pissing all over them in alot of areas

Its about Time they did something with this Building ....

Ugly Plus The New Render isn't great but an improvement ! Golden Mile aren't know for doing great looking Buildings

CITY LIVING
Julie Taylor julie.taylor@dailypost.co.nz | 29th April 2009

Inner-city apartments could be a reality in Rotorua in 14 months.

Planning consent has been granted for the development of the old Post Office building between Hinemoa and Pukuatua St into 75 one and two bedroom apartments with shopping and cafes on the ground level.

Developer Golden Mile Holdings Ltd had hoped to start the work last year but required additional planning consent to add a fifth storey.

That came through recently and marketing of the apartments will begin in mid-June.

Marketing will be done by LJ Hooker Rotorua and co-owner Annelise Baird described the development as a major step forward.

"This is new for Rotorua and it is very exciting."

Brochures and a scale model are being produced and 12 people are already waiting for the sales agreements to be drawn up. Only 15 sales are needed to start work on the building.

"They are hoping to be finished within 14 months."

Valuations are currently being carried out, but apartments are likely to start from about $190,000.

LJ Hooker co-owner Dave Patterson said the development would be good for the regeneration of the central business district.

"It will bring in 150 people plus who will want to eat, drink and fill the town. This is a huge opportunity for retailers and it will tie in with the airport development."

City Focus manager Dennis Olliver agrees.

"It will bring a vibrancy. It won't just be the people that live there.

"Their friends will come to visit and use the restaurants and eateries at night."

Rotorua Chamber of Commerce chief executive Roger Gordon said residents living in the CBD would help drive improvements.

"It becomes their suburb and they take ownership of that, which certainly increases the security and awareness of what is going on."

Grant Kilby, general manager of Destination Rotorua Economic Development agreed the project would drive economic activity, especially at night, and said the lifestyles of the residents would determine the need for cafes, delis or small supermarkets in the area.

LJ Hooker agents will be working from a sales office on the site and the Royal Court Apartments will be promoted at The Daily Post Home and Leisure Show at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre from July 17-19, but Mr Patterson said he expected many of the apartments will have sold by that time.

LJ Hooker residential sales agent Michael Bester described the development as "an injection into the economy of the local community".

This is close to Rotorua but there is no specific thread for the BoP so here we go. It does concern Rotorua marginally as Lake Rotoma is connected to Lake Rotorua.

Press Release: Environment Bay of Plenty

Lake Rotoma residents and interested persons are invited to consultation meetings later this month to talk about the draft Lake Rotoma Action Plan, which looks at ways to restore the water quality of the lake.

The meetings will be held on 18 June at the Rotoma Community Hall from 11am to 2pm and from 6pm to 8pm.

The Rotorua Lakes Strategy Group, made up of Te Arawa Lakes Trust, Rotorua District Council and Environment Bay of Plenty, is seeking feedback on the draft Lake Rotoma Action Plan, as part of the Rotorua Lakes Protection and Restoration Action Programme.

Environment Bay of Plenty Senior Planner Nick Zaman said the public consultation sessions are an opportunity for people to ask any questions they may have about the proposed actions, and do so in an open and informal environment. Verbal or written feedback on the draft action plan can be given there and then or at a later date.

Once completed, the Action Plan will guide decisions made by Environment Bay of Plenty and Rotorua District Council on what action needs to be taken over the next 20 years or so to reduce the nutrient inputs going into the lake.

Lake Rotoma has the best water quality of the 12 large Rotorua lakes but monitoring has shown that the lake water quality is slowly getting worse. The deterioration of water quality is from nutrients, namely nitrogen and phosphorus from septic tanks and farmland, being leached into the lake.

To reach the desired lake water quality the amount of phosphorus being discharged into Lake Rotoma needs to be reduced by at least 250 kg/yr (about 35 percent) and the amount of nitrogen by at least 1320 kg/yr (about 7 percent).

The draft Lake Rotoma Action Plan and feedback forms are available on Environment Bay of Plenty’s website www.envbop.govt.nz or phone 0800 ENVBOP (368 267). Feedback on the draft action plan closes on 3 July 2009 at 5pm
