Sydney's skyline is beautiful like Vancouver's, but both are far too small to make a top 10. Size is a factor. If it wasn't, old skylines with church steeples and fortifications would dominate a top 10.

[I don't like sydney and vancouver skyline. I love ASEAN city skyline more than those two cities like KL, Singapore, Manila and bangkok

What qualities in the built form of ASEAN cities do you like? I grew up in north America. Our cities reflect the dominant culture and tastes of Canada and the United States predominantly. Our skylines naturally have a north American aesthetic. ASEAN nations are going to build cities that reflect their culture and tastes. I'm trying to figure out exactly what that is, but haven't been able to put my finger on it.

They're definitely different, but how?

What is North American Aesthetic?

comparing Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles and New York..
Vancouver is pretty much recognized because of it's beautiful mountain backdrop.. Toronto the waterfront view + CN tower, New york - the scraper jungle and some iconic buildings, and Los Angeles.. uh.. the suburbs?

for me North American aesthetics is more linked with Urban Planning, which affects how skylines are formed. The concept of Suburbs and downtown is very "NORTH AMERICAN." Which is not usual for Asian Cities.. Urban planning for Asian cities are way different from North America. we don't necessarily build square blocks and parallel streets like in North America.

I haven't pinpointed all the specifics, but I certainly know when I'm looking at a north American city vs one from Europe, south America, or Asia. The linear nature of north American cities is one quality that comes to mind. We have the street grid and our office/residential buildings were built to fit that.

Our buildings tend to be less sculptural or curvy than in Europe and south America, while design details often give away that I'm looking at an office building in Asia as opposed to one here. Taiwan 101 and Petronas would never have been built in north America. Those buildings give nods to the Malaysian and Chinese cultures. Likewise, Willis Tower or FCP are very north American. They're utiliarian and boxy with no religious or ethnic specific characteristics.

I'm sure there are lots of other nuances, but I'm still early on in categorizing it all.

I would never put Hong Kong over New York or Chicago for best Skyline, it could go over chicago for street level though....

I think Manila deserves to be in the top 10 best skylines in the World.

Sdyney looks rather tiny from most POVs.. except aerials of the core where it looks nice and dense.

Perhaps, in another 2 days you could post another 9 photos of Sydney because we're not sure what it looks like yet. The 17 you posted isn't quite enough.

Then after that, perhaps some Sydney photos? Then there's always next week. We might have forgotten by then and our scroll bar might not be working. Sydney looks great, but I'm starting to feel bombarded.

Sydney's skyline is quite "thin" but it does extend for over 5km. Here's the main skyline from Darling Harbour - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3316/...10e09517_o.jpg

Because they're both on a harbour? Because the buildings certainly don't compare ... Vancouver looks like little more than a mess of 100m clear-glassed apartment towers.
