China has a lot of historic buildings, but they are struggling to survive among the ugly modern ones! Not only China, but also the whole asia continent. The traditional ones must be the most different, city administrators should know of this!

So what is the cut off on the historical skyline part of this thread? Because 100 years ago NYC still looked better than just about every other city most of these posters drool over. Manila, Sao Paulo, Rio, Sydney, any current city in China save for the Victoria Harbourfront of Hong Kong; great if you have investments in concrete. I think most skyscraper enthusiasts always forget about or forsake architecture for building height. That's why a city like Chicago, which invented the skyscraper, will always have a better skyline than say a Dubai or a Chongqing, because atleast to a small degree architecture still matters, unless you're building a 40 story condo tower in the Gold Coast neighborhood or down by Soldier Field then all bets are off.

The first 2 are wonderful. Is the CBD on a hill?

not really, it might just look like it does as it banks away from the Harbour and over Hyde Park. You can sort of see what I'm getting at with this topographic map

As for historic 'skylines', it's hard to go past New York, Chicago, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Old Montreal, etc. These are the cities that really revolutionised skyscrapers as we know them today.

An older shot, but sadly it will take about another month until the photographers are out on the island taking photos from this angle again.

The poll result is absurd. Bangkok's skyline in top 5? Sigh, please kill me.

Hong Kong might be a worthy winner, but in my opinion there is no other city in the world with such a historical skyline like New York city. Shanghai is very worthy aswell, unfortunately most people around the world do not know about Shanghai's history as being Asia's only world city in the 30's. That's why people won't vote for Shanghai. Bastards.

there's nothing wrong in giving justice to your city but calling other people "bastards" just because they don't appreciate shnghai's skyline the way you do is just too much...

p.s shanghai has always been number 3 or 4 in my list after NYC, HK...., and sometimes Chicago, depending on my mood...

Check out Bangkoks skyline thread, maybe you will change opinion. Bangkok is not only temples and lowrise buildings. After all, you put Seoul on your top 10, Seouls skyline is terrible.

Honestly, despite trying my best not to have a north American bias, it does creep in. It's from constantly viewing pics that I've come to appreciate other skylines such as Bangkok. It really is quite extensive, tall, and beautiful. I recently bumped Bangkok into my top 10 for the very first time.

I have it at #9, and as my favourite skyline in south east Asia. Keep building!

For Shanghai I like the skyline in Puxi(west, old) more than Pudong(East, newer, the skyline you always see).
