Each has his or her own preference, and I think Rio's skyline is much more pleasant to the eye than Sao Paulo's.

São Paulo, is a sea of buildings, low and of doubtful taste the Rio, its downtown is more prominent

I find it ironic that Berlin is currently ahead of London in terms of 10 pt votes. So much for the hometown loyalty, londoners!

I dont think this is only about which city has more buildings or more dense. If that was the case cities like shanghai, beijing, sao paulo, rio, mumbai etc would rank above sydney and toronto. Infact dubai with far more impressive tall buildings should really be right up there and would also be ranked well above Sydney and Toronto. So there is more to a skylike than just sheer number of buildings or even impressive tall buildings. It is also about aestethics and a thing called wow factor. Its not just about spectacular settings because vancouver and Rio would win hands down in that respect but its the juxtaposition of the buildings and X factor with sydney which makes people fall in love with it. Infact I was reading an article where they said sydney city has one of the best feng shui of all the cities.
I personally loved vancouver's natural settings and surroundings more than sydney. I also liked Toronto's streetscape and building scape more, its very pedestrian friendly and absolutely beautiful. Vancouver has the beautiful mountains and water so close to the city and easily accessable. Vancouver is one of my favourite cities in the world and I would love to live there if the weather was a little better. Vancouver is also more my kind of town because I could loose myself in beautiful stanley park, the water and the mountains and the great thing is they are so easily accessable. Yet everytime I go to near sydney harbour, I am blown away by its spectacular beauty and still get goosebumps. I am not sure what it is, its a combination of bright and sunny climate, glimmering deep blue water and the bluest sky, greenery of the harbour foreshore, the harbour bridge, opera house and the buildings which gives sydney such a dramatic look. The whole scenery is set to perfect human scale. You can frame all thse beauty in one single scene. Somehow the forefathers got the planning just right in sydney. Its is really one of the most beautifull and spectacular cities I have ever seen. New years eve in sydney harbour is the most spectacular setting you will find anywhere. The whole thing feels surreal because the whole harbour feels like a single giant stage full of drama and the atmosphere is absolutely electrifying. Sydney is truly spectacular whether it is Day ![]() or Night So I dont blame the voters for falling for sydney's beauty and charm even though it doesnt have the tallest or densest skyscrapers in the world. Afterall why wouldn't anyone fall in love with a city that looks so spectacular. Last edited by indosky; May 13th, 2009 at 08:19 AM. |

Great post, Indosky! I'd just like to point out that that Sydney day picture's old. I'd say around 1992-1996 but it's definately taken at least one or two years before the new millenium.

The feelings I get when I go to sydney harbour or the spectacular deep blue beaches are, excitement, joyful, exhiliration, anticipation, great buzz, surreal and euphoric. Its like an giant big anti depressent. Vancouver's beautiful water, gorgeous parks, trees, greenery, mountains and sheer natural beauty evokes feelings of happiness, calmness, tranquility, harmony, peacefulness, serenenity, at ease, spirituality and contentment. Its like food for your soul. Also what makes canada so beautiful is the niceness of its people. Last edited by indosky; May 14th, 2009 at 05:57 PM. |

Hongkong is the best modern Highrise forever.
Best bird eyes view. Many highrise buildings on the island. |

Well, there's not really a skyline in Rome on those pictures, it's quite flat.
But I really like it

^ Yeah while all those other historical skyline are filled with supertalls.
Anyway, I do agree with you. Rome (and Florence and Amsterdam too!) deserve to be in that list. But, still a decent list. Thanks for the effort Major Deegan.

Well, let's put it like this: There's a difference between a fantastic historical skyline (Dresden, Prague, Lübeck, Brugge) and "just" a great historical cityscape (major Italian cities).
