Fashola in Canada, inspects train for light rail

Already, substantial work has begun on the project between the National Theatre in Iganmu and Mile 2. According to a recent 2011 Monthly Progress Report on the project, all the columns for the concourse at the Lagos end of the rail line have been completely cast to the Alaba station’s elevated level with the concretes currently being cured while the superstructure work on the station is still in progress.

The rail project, according to the report, will increase economic activities along the corridor, reduce traffic congestion and vehicular emission since owners would be encouraged to drop their vehicles and use public transport. “Aside from creating employment, both directly and indirectly, the project will help to build a crop of expertise in the construction of this magnitude, thus affording Nigerians the opportunity to be part of historical moments,” the Report said. Currently, even at its construction stage, over 4,000 are engaged at various skills level on the light rail project while over 8,000 Nigerians would be engaged to work on the system when it takes off.

For now, thousands are also engaged in a secondary economy supplying raw material inputs, food and refreshments to those working at the sites. Governor Fashola, who had said during the campaigns that the inspection would take place once the elections were over, is being accompanied on the inspection tour by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Ben Akabueze, his Science and Technology counterpart, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Special Adviser for Works, Engineer Ganiyu Johnson, the Managing Director of the Metropolitan Area and Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the Director General of the Public Private Partnership Office, Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi.

I hope those won't be the actual trains because they look old and boring. I'm expecting them to make use of modern looking trains.

Actually, those are the actual trains, all it needs is a little bid of rebranding, redesigning and refurb and you will be surprised how it would turn up, at least they look better than the ones the irresponsible federal government imported from Brazil last year, the lagos state government are under huge financial pressure with new minimum wage of 18,750 Naira being implemented, highest in Nigeria, they have no business with purchasing the rolling stock, Fashola is only in Canada in order to make sure that Eko Rail are not "taking the piss" by importing very low grade trains, as Fashola earlier stated the blue line is the most important line as it will set the pace for the other lines to progress, the preferred bidder for the operation and maintainance of blue line is Eko Rail were told to invest at least $500 million (Not just cost of rolling stocks "trains" but also communications, purchase and supply of electricity to run the trains daily and depot management), which is nothing compared to other Western countries such as Germany, Japan and U.S, If the cost were any higher than $500 million, no bidders would have shown any expression of interests in the Lagos light rail system, Note that Nigerians (lagosians) are not used to intracity rail transport, if this goes very well, and the Private Investor Ekorail can recoup all its initial investment ($500 million) within the space of first 5 years of operation, then they can actually use this as a concrete proof to raise the bar to may be about $750 million when bidding for the red line and so on. please people lets be patient.

yes, from what I heard lagos will be using refurbished Toronto subway cars on the eko rail system. most likely the old ones, since toronto transit just bought some new cars a few years ago.

Very good plan, IMO. the most interesting thing to me is that these are heavy rail cars, which... Lagos needs the capacity of grade-separated heavy rail, not light rail. And they're electric, not diesel!

This project is really pretty impressive.

I AGREE WITH YOU TOTALLY, THIS TAKES SOME SERIOUS WILL TO BE ABLE TO PULL THIS OFF IN THIS ENVIROMENT OF MEDIOCRITY.

THE ONLY OTHER REQUIRMENT IS AIR CONDITIONING and a law to be passed in the Lagos State house of assembly penalizing people who dont use deodorant !!! LOL !

Nice.
I wonder if there would have been disruptions to the construction going on, because of the Torrential rains this year..... I should think so.

@Garth,

Thanks for the video. I was in Nigeria in July, but did not have the guts to go to the Maza Maza - Mile2 -Orile Axis cos i heard the traffic was crazy because of the ongoing work.

Can u confirm if the construction has moved beyond Mile two?
