Most of these aircraft we saw (VS, AZ, QR, BA) were LHR diversions! Interesting thing!

Germas are doing many things in their own specific ways focused of efficiency and perfection. I love their cars and airports, too bad about their language. I hate to use it, so I do only when really necessary. Life is too short to learn german properly.

It doesn't matter, even many germans are not able to speak this language properly

I love a quote of Mark Twain, who traveld to Germany in 1878. He felt desperate when he tried to learn german:

"Life is too short to learn german, you can learn english in 30 days, french in 30 months, but it takes 30 years to learn german"

@ek413: Frankfurt is a major air freight hub in Europe, this lifts the number of flight movements over LHR.

A few years ago I remember I saw several military aircrafts on Francfurt, there were somewhere near the edge of the airport. Are there still some sort of military on the airfield or I was wrong few years ago ?

Well i guess you mean the "Rhein-Main Air Base" - an former US airbase in the south part of the airport.
c5-galaxys were stationed there, but in 2005 the airbase was closed.

Since the closing the airbase was demolished and the area was prepared for the new terminal 3, which will be build in a few years.

btw: 2 hd videos of the airrail center

facts and figures of runway 4

Construction for the new runway, which has begun in January 2009, is in full progress. Opening is planed for 2010/11. The additional capacity will allow 126 coordinated flight movements per hour - the number of flight movements per year can reach 700.000.

Basic Data

The new runway northwest will be a landing only runway with a length of 2,800 meters. It will run parallel (operation directions 25 and 07) to the existing two take-off and landing runways. The runway will be located in the northwestern vicinity of Frankfurt airport. The axis distance to the existing northern runway will be approximately 1,500 meters. In contrast to the situation with the existing parallel runways with a narrow distance between them, it will be possible to have independent parallel approaches on the new northwest runway and on the southern runway.

Design

To the side of the new runway there will be a parallel taxiway in a distance of 200 meters. The new runway and it's parallel taxiway will be connected by six rapit exit taxiways and one taxiway at both the east and west end of the new runway .

Furthermore, two taxiways across the high speed train track, A3 highway and airport ring road ensure access to the existing flight operation areas of the airport. The new runway will be an all weather operation runway, equipped with an ILS category IIIb.

Test Flights

In January, DFS (Deutsche Flugsicherung - German Air Navigation Services) assigned test flights over the future runway, to measure up, if airplanes approaching the new runway can be identified by the radar surveillance systems at Frankfurt Airport. A Super King Air 350 type aircraft flew in low level flight across the construction site. The flight level was approx. 15 meters, or 45 ft.

I think FRA has had more aircraft take offs/landings than LHR for a while now. But LHR was still ahead on total passenger movement. In other words, slightly more smaller planes took off, where as less actual passengers. This could be related to London having 5 international airports to share the load. i.e. smaller planes taking off from Frankfurt FRA would often land in London City rather than Heathrow. A few years back, these airports combined made London the busiest hub in the world by a long shot, though I am not sure if it still stands.

@ Justme

Yep, it still does. And, by a mile. Greater London's 5 major airports has handled roughly 130 million air passengers annually for a couple of years now. It's closest competitor, the New York--Tri-State Area, only handled slightly over 100 million air passengers last year.

Thanks for the update. When I checked this a few years ago, London was the only hub over 100million at the time, so it's interesting to see another city has crossed that boundary

I would imagine FRA to pass LHR in passenger movement though once the new runway is complete as LHR is in a bit of a rut if the government and protesters hinder their expansion.
