Well, FRA nearly sees the same number of widebodies that LHR does, and actually is Europe's Jumbo Jet Heaven. Unless BA orders at least 10 additional A388 or B748 FRA will even see more VLA movements than LHR in the future (LHR will get slightly more A380s but FRA can add several Jumbos to its VLA list). There are indeed more jets of types B737 or the A320 family in FRA, but what really makes the difference to the pax numbers of LHR and FRA is BA's current enormous pax B744 fleet (world's largest) and FRA's uncountable cargo movements.

New taxiway designations

The reason for changing the taxiway designations is the expansion of the airport: Due to the current construction of the new Runway Northwest, FRA will feature several new taxiways. These must be integrated in FRA's standard designation system.

Source: Fraport

Because the so-called Nato phonetic alphabet was already maxed out for the existing taxiways, Fraport developed new taxiway designations in cooperation with DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung and Lufthansa. The new designation system is in accordance with international standards and is modularly expandable.

The new designation system becomes effective in June 2010. The official change-over will take place within a single night from June 12 to 13, 2010 – when some 600 signs will be exchanged at 450 different locations around Frankfurt Airport without interrupting regular airport operations.

Celebrating the First FRA-based Super Jumbo

Today, Frankfurt Airport once again welcomes the A380 super jumbo. Fraport, owner and manager of FRA, expects the A380 to land at approximately 16:00 hours. Upon arrival, this first A380 to join the Lufthansa fleet will be officially named "Frankfurt am Main" by Frankfurt's lord mayor Petra Roth in a ceremony at the A380 maintenance base on the southern side of the airport. Lufthansa has ordered 15 A380s and taken options on another 10 for its superjumbo fleet to be based at the FRA intercontinental hub. The inaugural flight of Lufthansa's first A380 is scheduled for June 6 at about 20:30, when the German national soccer team takes to the skies on the Frankfurt am Main to Johannesburg for the World Cup 2010 hosted by South Africa.

The new rwy will be opened in winter 2011/2012. so 1.5 years remaining.
But the construction will be finished earlier and they need the few month for ils test flights and other stuff.

What a nice building! I love it....

It reminds me a bit of the ING HQ, but the Fra has a larger version of it. I love this kind of architecture.

Busiest Airfreight Month in FRA’s History

Frankfurt Airport handled 4.76 million passengers in May, a +7.1% surge compared to May 2009. The figure was a record for the month of May, surpassing the May 2008 total of 4.74 million.

Surging by 39.7 percent year-on-year, airfreight tonnage at Frankfurt Airport reached 204,332 metric tons – making May 2010 the busiest airfreight month in Frankfurt Airport's history.

May 2010 also marked a new record for maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) in absolute terms, with 2.49 million metric tons handled. Aircraft movements improved by 2.5 percent year-on-year to 41,694 takeoffs and landings. This improvement includes a conspicuous eight percent rise in intercontinental flights, underscoring FRA's outstanding role as an international air transportation hub.

Btw.: Will the "bridge" connecting to the Fernbahnhof some day provide a direct connection to the terminal? I don't know whether it used to be like that, but the current situation (first through the lower lever under the kiss and ride zone, then across some sidewalk of the alley to an escalator to the bridge, then...) is quite messed up.
