Thx for all the nice pics .

Enhancements regarding S-Bahn (Marbach-Backnang, Renningen-Böblingen, Kirchheim/Teck) and Stadtbahn (Zuffenhausen-Stammheim, Möhringen-Fasanenhof) are ongoing.

Stuttgart has the "Stadtbahn Stuttgart" a very effective light-rail-system, and the S-Bahn Stuttgart!
I don´t think so:

- Other Cities can offer a third system, namely U-Bahn.

- Night-Bus-system could be better as well. IMO not competitive with several even smaller metropolitan areas.

- Tickets are more expensive than in comparable cities.

Hm, I guess there are night busses everday, aren't there?

In Stuttgart? Only on the nights before Saturday, Sunday or a holiday.

Which is how it's managed in other metropolitan areas too of course - although there's minor differences: in Stuttgart, there'll typically only be 3 rounds driven on each route, in other places, night busses will run until the next morning's regular routes start. Other places have - at least partially - trams, U-Bahns and such running at night too.

Stuttgart, in my opinion, has a pretty good regional night bus layout, covering pretty much most of the S-Bahn network. In other places, you'll be stuck if you want to get out of the city after about 1 am.

... well, in cities under a million people in Germany, only Nürnberg has a real independant U-Bahn network that's not just an at-grade high-floor light-rail system with tunnels in the inner city (which is what Stuttgart's Stadtbahn pretty much is). And none of them really have as much coverage throughout the city as the Stadtbahn.

South Germany. Everything's more expensive (but yeah, Stuttgart even tops others there).

update 2013

It's time for a little update. f you want more information about public trasport, so take a look at my homepage with many pictures of ALL stations of the Stadtbahn and the S-Bahn of Stuttgart!

There is the Stadtbahn, the light-rail system of Stuttgart. For example the line U6 (for more pictures, click at the name of your favorite station).

There is the S-Bahn, the sub-urban system of Stuttgart. For example the line S3.

We also have nice rack railway - the Zahnradbahn. If you visit Stuttgart, don't miss a ride!

And there is a funicular - our Seilbahn.

Our historical trams - Historische Strassenbahn.

Take a look at our bus system - Busse.

And there are also trolley's - O-Bus Esslingen.

I hope you like it...

There's just something about this map and its layout (the 45 degree angles) that just makes it a bit confusing. Is it the official map?

Think so, but seems to be outdated (10.2006). Click for Current Version (12.2012)

Some major Changes:
U6-South (Möhringen-Fasanenhof)
15 -> U15
S1: extension (Plochingen-Kirchheim/Teck)
R31 -> S4/S40 (Marbach-Backnang)
S60 (Böblingen-Sindelfingen-Renningen)

Stuttgart orders more Tangos
13 Jan 2014

GERMANY: Stuttgart transport operator Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen has exercised an option for an additional 20 S-DT8.12 light rail vehicles from Stadler Pankow, the manufacturer announced on January 13. The order is worth €73m including spare parts.

SSB placed an initial order for 20 LRVs in early 2010, the first of which entered service in late 2013. Delivery of the additional vehicles is expected to begin in mid-2016.

The S-DT8.12 is part of Stadler’s Tango family. Each modular air-conditioned vehicle is 39·1 m long and 2 650 mm wide, with capacity for capacity for 250 passengers, including 106 seated. The standard-gauge bidirectional vehicles have a maximum speed of 80 km/h and eight independently powered axles.

‘The vehicles are easy to adapt to the existing city centre infrastructure and are ideally suited to the conditions on the Stuttgart tram network. They can handle tight bends and gradients of up to 9%’, explained Stadler Pankow Director Michael Daum.

Depots (Betriebshofs) in Stuttgart

I've been trying to locate the depots in Stuttgart, and I've found 4...
1) a depot alongside HESLACH VOGELRAIN station,
2) a depot alongside HORNBACH, south of Aldingen, and...
3 & 4) what appears to be 2 depots south-east of VAIHINGEN, close to ROHRERWEG and SSB ZENTRUM stations.
Could someone confirm if this is correct?

Betriebshof 1 is located in Heslach, Betriebshof 2 (SSB-Zentrum with main workshop) in Möhringen, Betriebshof 3 in Remseck-Aldingen, former Betriebshof 5 in Bad Canstatt is now a tramway museum and Betriebshof 10 at Marienplatz is for the "Zacke", an urban rack & pinion railway.

If you're interested in Stuttgart, watch my video about the Stuttgarter Stadtbahn:

Hm... right. On the other hand London is on some section also not a 'real metro' - more like suburban rail.

This video, as far as I understood, shows progress on rerouting of Stadtbahn tunnel around Central station. This is in part with Stuttgart 21 project:
