Work starts on Sumatra track-doubling project
Friday, May 23, 2014

INDONESIA's directorate general of railways has commenced work to construct a second track on 26km of the 42km Medan - Aras Kabu - Kuala Namu International Airport line in northern Sumatra following a groundbreaking ceremony on May 22.

The Transportation Ministry is allocating Rupiah 3.9 trillion ($US 337.2m) towards the project from its state budget allocation, which will be completed in two stages up to 2017. The first phase is expected to cost Rupiah 150bn and be completed by the end of the year, with the second phase expected to start in 2015.

The project is part of plans for the development of the Trans Sumatra Railway, a 2856km cross-island 1067mm-gauge network that involves rehabilitating existing and building new infrastructure between Sumatra's three existing separate networks for both passenger and freight services, connecting Ache and Lampung by 2030.

Mr Hermanto Dwo Atmoko, Indonesia's director general of railways, says that some sections of the railway would be elevated to ease traffic congestion in Medan and to eliminate 12 level crossings in the city. He added that the new double-track railway will shorten journey times for the current 37-47-minute trip "by at least 10 minutes."

PT Railink operates a fleet of five six-car trains on the airport railway, which opened in 2013, with each accommodating up to 308 passengers on 18 round-trips per day

New stations and double-track completed in Sumatra
Tuesday, June 10, 2014

RESIDENTS of South Sumatra are celebrating the opening of 11 new stations and the completion of a 22km track-doubling project from Prabumulih to Niru, which will improve capacity for freight and passenger services in operator PT Kereta Api's Regional Division III South.

Six of the stations - Sungai Tuha, Lubuk Batang, Kepayang, Sukamerindu, Talang Padang, and Tanjung Terang - are located in South Sumatra, and five - Sukamenanti, Gedung Ratu, Candi Mas, Tanjung Rajo and Way Pisang - are located in Lampung province.

Indonesia's minister for state-owned enterprises Mr Dahlan Iskan says the enhancements will improve passenger services for this year's Idul Fitri, the Muslim festival which marks the end of Ramadan.

"It's now a matter of how to maximise existing trains and improve the service, especially ticket purchases," Iskan says. "We expect that there will be no long queues for tickets because an online system has already been applied."

PT Kereta Api CEO Mr Ignasius Jonan added that six additional stations and 266km of additional double-track would be completed in 2015 in Regional Division III, stating that he expects the "government as the main facility owner to continue the development of stations and double track."

Tanjung Priok rail link mooted

Jakarta: State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan has urged railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to build a link between Tanjung Priok Port and Tanjung Priok Station.
"This is similar to [Jakarta acting governor] Ahok's idea on how we can have trains at the port to transport containers from the port," Dahlan said in Jakarta on Thursday after a weekly meeting with state-owned firms' CEOs as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said that the new railway network would triple freight transportation capacity.
"If one train [with 10 cars] is equal to 30 trucks, then 20 trains will be able to carry goods equal to 600 trucks a day," he said.
He estimated that the new railway development would cost Rp20bn ($1.68m). [13/06/14]

Indonesia launches Sulawesi railway construction
Thursday, August 14, 2014

CONSTRUCTION was officially launched in Barru, Indonesia, on August 12 on the first phase of the railway network on the island of Sulawesi.

The first line will run north along the coast from Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, to the port of Pare-Pare. The total cost of the first phase is Rs 9 trillion ($US 769m) including rolling stock.

Last year the six provincial governments of Sulawesi signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian Ministry of Transport to develop plans for a 2000km network on the island. The Makassar Pare-Pare line is being developed under a separate accord signed by the South Sulawesi government and the ministry in 2012
