Russia to Construct Railways in East Kalimantan

Quote:

Railway company PT Kereta Api Borneo, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, is set to build a 575-kilometer railway system with total investment reaching US$2 billion.

The railway network will pass through four regencies across the province.

“They will be divided into two lanes, namely the North Lanes that will stretch for about 305 km and the South Lanes that will be around 270 km,” Kereta Api Borneo president director Sergey Kuznetsov said in Balikpapan on Monday.

He further explained that the North Lanes will connect Tabang, a remote district in Kutai Kartanegara regency, to Maloy, a coastal area in East Kutai. Meanwhile, the South Lanes will start from Melak in West Kutai and end in Buluminung, North Penajam Paser. Construction of the two lanes is expected to be completed by 2022, he added.

“At this time, we have completed a number of studies, such as geophysics and hydrology. We also have taken and tested 2,000 soil samples from areas where the lanes will be built,” said the company’s construction and business development head Vladimir Volkov.

The two railway lanes will be used to transport goods, in particular natural resources such as coal and crude palm oil. The railways will be used to carry passengers at least five years after it begins operations in 2022.

“Operating a passenger train needs a much more complicated permit and comprehensive cooperation with state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia,” said East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak. (foy/ebf)

Greater Jakarta LRT to use moving block signaling

Quote:
The government has decided to use moving block signaling -- a signaling system in which the blocks, or sections of track, are defined in real time by computers as protected zones around each train – for the Greater Jakarta light rail transit (LRT).

With a moving block system, trains can transport more passengers than when a fixed block system is used, said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

Budi said that by using moving block signaling, the LRT could transport up to 750,000 passengers per day while with fixed block it would only be able to transport 500,000.

“We want the system that offers a shorter headway. [With moving block], headway can be shortened to one minute,” said Budi as reported by kompas.com on Wednesday after attending a meeting to discuss the LRT project with Maritime Coordinating Minister Luhut Pandjaitan in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The cost of moving block signaling for the LRT project will be Rp 200 billion (US$14.96 million) to Rp 300 billion, Budi added.

Seventeen percent of the Greater Jakarta LRT has been developed to date. The system will have three three lines, namely Cawang-Cibubur, Cawang-Bekasi Timur and Cawang-Kuningan-Dukuh Atas. (bbn)

MRT and LRT to be Tested During 2018 Asian Games

Quote:
The mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT) project scattered across Jakarta is expected to be complete and tested on August 2018. “The projects should be complete by the time the 2018 Asian Games is held,” said Jakarta Governor, Djarot Saiful Hidayat today.

Djarot admits that some parts of the project has experienced some delays such as the section in Haji Nawi in South Jakarta. It is currently hampered by land acquisition issues.

The MRT project will connect Bundaran HI or the Selamat Datang Monument located in Central Jakarta with Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta. That route is expected to be fully functional in 2019.

The MRT and LRT project will be integrated with other mass transportations such as commuter lines, Transjakarta busses, and bus rapid transits (BRT).

Other than to overcome Jakarta’s chronic congestion problem, the MRT and LRT project was also built to greet the 2018 Asian Games that will be held on August 18 until September 2, 2018, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang.

DPRD promised to recommend a Rp2.5 trillion budget for the MRT project. Rp15 trillion was spent for the first phase of the 15.7 kilometer Lebak Bulus-Bundaran HI route. Meanwhile the second phase comprised of an 8.7 kilometer route from Bundaran HI-Kampung Bandan spent Rp22.5 trillion, besides the LRT project.

that should be sufficient for this busy city

The truth is that Jakarta requires a lot of carriages in any case. A ten-line MRT is bare-bones. A total number of a thousand trains (commuter, LRT, MRT) with 10.000 carriages, and the total capacity at 1 million people travelling simultaneously within the 20-million megatropolis isn't even that crazy even if still almost half of the people travels by other means.

Give it a few decades

Indonesia's national rail network aims for more growth, less inequality

Quote:

Indonesia has finalised its plan for a national railway network, which as envisioned by President Joko Widodo, will beef up land connections and support all seven of its key seaport hubs.

The network will also include a separate circle line around Bali to offer better access to untapped parts of the resort island where new tourism developments can be built.

With more than 3,200km of train tracks that will criss-cross the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, it has been touted as the most extensive railway project in Indonesia since its independence from the Dutch 72 years ago.

Once completed, the project is expected to not only drive trade and economic growth, but the government also hopes the improved inter-connectivity will lower inequality in less developed regions.

Railway projects in Indonesia

Hello everybody,

Throughout Indonesia there are many ideas, plans, and projects for expansion of the railway network. I want to prepare an overview map of this, and write an article about it on my blog. In some cases, however, it is very difficult to find the exact information. Below I will give an overview of the status as I think it is at the moment. I would like to hear any additions and corrections! Or does anyone know of an existing source of all projects?

Sumatra
Under construction
  • Aceh: Bireuen-Lhokseumawe
  • North Sumatra/Aceh: Besitang-Sei Liput
  • North Sumatra: Binjai-Langkat (80 km)
  • North Sumatra: Rantau Prapat-Kota Pinang (48 km)
  • West Sumatra: Padang - Padang Airport
  • Bengkulu: Bengkulu-South Sumatra border near Lubuk Linggau
Planned for construction 2018-2020
  • Aceh/North Sumatra: Sigli-Besitang (the sections Besitang-Sei Liput and Bireuen-Lhokseumawe are already under construction, a short section near Krueng Geukuh is already operational)
  • North Sumatra: Medan-Belawan (open for passenger trains)
  • North Sumatra: Medan-Parapat
  • North Sumatra-Riau: Kota Pinang-Duri-Dumai-Pekanbaru
  • Jambi/Riau: Jambi-Pekanbaru
  • Jambi/South Sumatra: Jambi-Palembang
  • West Suamtra: Pariaman-Sungai Limau
  • South Sumatra: Palembang-Tanjung Api-Api
  • Lampung: Bandar Lampung-Bakauheni (construction 2019)
Planned for after 2020
  • Aceh: Sigli-Banda Aceh
  • West Sumatra: Pariaman-Padang Panjang-Bukittinggi-Payakumbuh
  • West Sumatra: Solok-Padang Panjang (currently only tourist trains)
  • West Sumatra: Sawah Lunto/Muarakalaban-Muaro
  • West Sumatra/Riau: Muaro-Pekanbaru
  • Some other vague plans such as Bengkulu-Padang, Sungai Limau further north to Sibolga or even all the way along the west coast to Banda Aceh, and Rantau Prapat west to Padang Sidempuan, but I don't think these are concrete.

Java
Under construction
  • Central Java: Solo-Solo Airport
  • Banten: Batu Ceper-Soekarno Hatta Airport
  • Jakarta/West Java: High speed train Jakarta-Bandung
Planned for construction 2018-2020
  • West Java: Bandung-Cirebon (via Kertajati Airport)
Planned for after 2020
  • Reactivation of about 1,600 km of railways that stopped operation in the 1970s and 80s.

Sulawesi
Under construction
  • South: Makassar-Parepare (145 km)
Planned for construction 2018-2020
  • North: Manado-Bitung (48 km)
  • North/Gorontalo: Bitung-Gorontao-Isimu (Airport) (340 km)
  • South: Makassar-Watampone via south coast (249 km)
  • South/West: Parepare-Mamuju (225 km)
Planned for after 2020
  • West/Central/Gorontalo: Mamuju-Palu-Isimu (about 1000 km)
  • And some vague plans for connections to Kendari and Luwuk.

Papua
Planned for construction 2018-2020
  • West Papua: Sorong-Manokwari (390 km, phase I)
Planned for after 2020
  • West Papua/Papua: Manokwari-Nabire (>500 km, phase II)
  • Papua: Nabire-Jayapura and Nabire Timika (phase III)

Kalimantan
Not clear to me. There are apparently plans from the Malaysian border in the west all the way around via Pontianak, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan and Samarinda to the Malaysian border in the east, but I cannot find the current status of the various sections. On some maps there are also sections drawn from Palangkaraya to Tanjung directly (in addition to the detour via Banjarmasin), and a railway Banjarmasin-Kota Baru. For Banjarmasin there would be also an airport connection. In addition, there is a PPP scheme (together with Russia?), but these are for cargo only? Or for passengers as well?

Bali
Plan for phase I is a railway from Denpasar via Ubud to Singaraja?

Batam
There are some ideas for a railway line on Batam, but I don't know how serious that is.
