Officially entered in to the Guiness world book of records as the worlds widest long span bridge beating out the Sidney harbour bridge by 16.26m's.

Not bad.

What I find amusing is that according to the Port Mann / Highway 1 website they have referenced the bridge as having ""two"" bridge decks".

"•The new bridge is 65 metres wide, including 50 metres of roadway (including shoulders), five metre wide multi-use path, with three metres of clearance for pedestrians and cyclists, and 10 metre gap/median where pylons should support the two bridge decks."

http://www.pmh1project.com/about-the...ts-Trivia.aspx

The New Port Mann Bridge will have 10 lanes and 1 bicycle / pedestrian pathway. I can't help but think of the George Washington Bridge that has 14 lanes and 2 bicycle / pedestrian pathways AND on top of that a mainspan that is over TWICE the length of the New Port Mann Bridge. THE GWB is a much more of a workhorse. Of course it just doesn't hold the width record because there are two levels. Then again it can be argued that the NPMB has "two decks"

Just something to ponder.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting out to the New Port Mann Bridge someday.

Sort of like how a spire can make a building taller than the other...

I think it's a huge bridge but I don't think it's really cool. The pylon look quite small when we compare with the width of bridge. Because it's stayed cable bridge so I think it has better have big, tall and smoothly pylon. Anyway Canada is very very beautiful. I like clean streets, nice houses, gigantic green forest and endless highway.

Bridge is now officially open in both directions with a total of 8 lanes. The final 2 lanes will be open when the Cape Horn interchange is complete.

Great looking Bridge and definitely complimentary to it's surroundings. Last saw it in August and the traffic on the Coquittlam side was challenging for an out of towner.

Probably been asked before, but what is to become of the old bridge? Will it be torn down, any chance of it being surrendered to pedestrians and cyclists?

The new bridge will have a dedicated pedestrian and bicyclist pathway, thus no need to save the old bridge.
