Delivery of new rolling stock ordered by ZSSK ordered in previous years is ending. Last pieces will be delivered this year. Final count will be 10 double-deck EMUs, 10 double-deck push-pull train sets, 12 DMUs and 2 multi-system electric locomotives.

The purchase of another batch of new rolling stock was already announced. ZSSK is going to buy 9 EMUs for maximum price of 90 mil. € and 20 DMUs also for maximum price 90 mil. €. They should be delivered until the end of 2015. It's likely they will be manufactured by the companies which made also the vehicles from the previous batch, i.e. EMUs by Czech Škoda and DMUs by domestic ŽOS Vrútky.

Not only likely - they want to buy City Elephants and I'll be suprised if Skoda doesn't win.

From International Railway Journal, 20th February 2013

PKP Cargo to acquire ZSSK Cargo?

POLISH State Railways (PKP) subsidiary PKP Cargo has become the latest potential buyer to be linked with ZSSK Cargo as the Slovak government continues its search for a strategic partner for the ailing Slovakian state-owned railfreight operator.

Last month the prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovakia said the two countries were considering a merger between CD Cargo and ZSSK Cargo. However, CD Cargo is grappling with financial problems of its own, having made a loss of around €9m last year.

With doubts growing over the merger, PKP Cargo has started talks with ZSSK Cargo. PKP Cargo currently competes with ZSSK Cargo, operating freight trains through Slovakia into Hungary and it also holds a license in Austria. Cooperation would ease the situation between the two.

Furthermore, there is a real risk that ZSSK Cargo might lose significant coal and ore traffic in eastern Slovakia. US Steel's Kosice steelworks is currently for sale and if Russian or Ukrainian investors take over, as is widely anticipated, steel production is likely to move further east.

ZSSK Cargo has accumulated debts of €600m and the workforce is to be cut by 600 this year.

ZSSK signed contract with Škoda for delivery of 9 EMUs class 671 for 86.4 mil. €. They are double-deck electric multi-system units with maximum speed 160 km/h intended for commuter transport. They will be operated on railways around cities Bratislava and Košice.

Today there was officially inaugurated 17 km long modernised section of corridor Va (TEN-T corridor 23), which is part of main line Bratislava - Žilina - Košice. 43 km are currently U/C and more are being prepared. This section includes 1.7 km long tunnel. The modernised line is fully interoperable, trains can run at maximum speed of 160 km/h.

This is Slovakia's first section of railway equipped with ETCS level 2, already modernised lines have only ETCS level 1. It's also the first time a ballastless track was built in Slovakia. It's the tunnel and adjacent section.

Tunnel Turecký vrch, the first railway tunnel built in Slovakia since 1966:

Last week two private operators announced they are going to start new services this December.

Czech based Regiojet already operates IC trains from Prague via Ostrava, Czech Republic to northern Slovakian town Žilina, it is also operating subsidized commuter trains on line Bratislava - Komárno. Now Regiojet is going to run their IC trains on Slovak main line Bratislava - Žilina - Košice. They will compete with state owned operator ZSSK (IC trains by ZSSK run without state subsidies). Regiojet is also going to extend its trains Prague - Žilina to Košice, Slovakia's second biggest city.

Another private operator - LEO express, which currently operates IC trains between Prague and Ostrava in Czech Republic is going to extend its service from Prague via Ostrava and Žilina to Košice. This operator however wants to cooperate with Slovakia national carrier ZSSK, not compete with it.

Regiojet's IC near Žilina:

Deep in the mountains of central Slovakia there is an abandoned, never completed railway (Tisovec - Revúca - Ľubeník [back then called Chyžnianska Voda] - Slavošovce - Štítnik - Nižná Slaná). Construction started in 1940 and it was officially stopped in 1948. It is an interesting piece of engineering effort because there is plenty of tunnels, bridges, cuts and embankments. Currently there are plans to rebuild it at least into a cycling path.

The metioned railway is on the map marked as "projektované trate"

It was standard gauge. It was supposed to connect existing standard gauge railways in neighbouring valleys.

Slovakian ERTMS contract awarded
30 Apr 2014

SLOVAKIA: Infrastructure manager ŽSR has awarded contracts for the provision of ERTMS on the 250 km route from Bratislava to the Czech border via Žilina and Čadca by the end of 2015.

General contractor AŽD Praha will provide ETCS Level 2 on the 37 km section from the Czech border to Žilina at a cost of €45m, while Kapsch CarrierCom has been awarded a €20m contract to provide GSM-R coverage along the whole route to Bratislava using 3GPP Release 4 core technology. The project is being supported by EU funding.

‘This project is of particular importance due to the transit corridor running through Slovakia,’ said Kari Kapsch, CEO of Kapsch CarrierCom. ‘The implementation of ERTMS in that country is an important element in achieving a modern rail network across Europe.’

Thanks for the pics.
So between Zilina and Vrutky the alignment of the railway will not be changed and thus higher speeds (160 km/h or so) will not be achieved?

What about the section between Puchov and Povazska Bystrica? AFAIK a totally new alignment with several new tunnels and bridges is planned there. Any news on that? When will construction start there?

Speed 160 km/h will be between Žilina and Varín (this section is not currently undergoing modernisation). What you see on the photos (section Varín - Vrútky) is rather deep maintenance which means no speed upgrade, and for now also no ETCS. This section was in bad condition so it was necessary to reconstruct it, it's not part of the upgrade process of corridor Va to 160 km/h between Bratislava and Žilina. This part of the Va corridor (Varín - Vrútky - Ružomberok - Liptovský Mikuláš) will be the last modernised section because it's in difficult terrain and current speed limits there vary between 90 and 120 km/h what is acceptable.

Yes, Púchov - Považská Bystrica will be in almost completely new alignment, reconstruction should start in 2015. Reconstruction of the next section Považská Bystrica - Žilina will begin soon, contract with construction company is already signed.

This is how it will look like:

AAE acquires majority stake in ZSSK Cargo wagon fleet
06 Jun 2014

ZSSK Cargo freight train

ZSSK Cargo freight train

SLOVAKIA: European wagon leasing company AAE has been selected to acquire a majority stake in the Cargo Wagon fleet management subsidiary of state-owned freight operator ZSSK Cargo for €7m.

In July 2013 the government approved a restructuring plan under which ZSSK Cargo is to concentrate on freight operations, with its wagon management, intermodal and rolling stock maintenance activities to be taken over by three new subsidiaries. While ZSSK Cargo is to remain state-owned, international partners were sought to acquire stakes in the Cargo Wagon fleet management and ZSSK Cargo Intermodal businesses which were formally established in October 2013. ZSSK Cargo is to use the proceeds to reduce debt.

Under the deal announced on June 6, AAE is to pay €7m for a 66% stake in Cargo Wagon, with ZSSK Cargo retaining 34%. Cargo Wagon will purchase 12 450 wagons from ZSSK Cargo for €180m, with 8 218 to be leased back to ZSSK Cargo under long-term contracts.

‘Apart from the price we offered, the comprehensive concept for the subsequent marketing of the wagons was decisive, supported by our many years of experience in this field as well as the spirit of partnership which we have developed with ZSSK and Slovakia over the last 20 years’, said AAE Group CEO Karsten Sachsenröder.
