There was an initiative of a private company to comprehensively modernise the Bratislava Central Station and adjacent square, but this project failed.

Recently the city has slightly refurbished the square with public transport facilities and ŽSR (railway infrastructure administrator) revealed plans for modest reconstruction (more like face-lift) of current station building just couple of days ago.

In the present there are discussions about completely new central station on different location. There are now no real plans for substantial reconstruction of the Central Station.

Long-distance operating contract tender cancelled
28 Feb 2017

SLOVAKIA: The Ministry of Transport & Construction has formally cancelled the tendering of a €10m contract to operate subsidised long-distance passenger services between Bratislava and Banská Bystrica via Šurany and Levice.

As a result, all passenger services on the 230 km route will continue to be operated by state-owned ZSSK for the immediate future. Meanwhile, the ministry plans to reassess its requirements before launching a new tender

Almost forgot to post it here. Last week there was an opening ceremony of the new bridge on Bratislava - Košice line in Trenčín. The first train to use the bridge was IC 520 Košice - Bratislava. The bridge was build about 100 meters from the old one to stretch curves and allow higher speed.

Slovak national railway operator ZSSK has leased 10 Siemens Vectron locomotives for 10 years. The leasing contract is worth 58.7 million €. The locomotives will haul all IC trains on the main line Bratislava - Košice and likely also some fast trains on the same line.

The first Siemens Vectron locomotives have already arrived to Slovakia. They are undergoing test rides and they will soon get the corporate livery.

Since yesterday (10th December) entered into service three new Vectron locomotives of total 10 leased. These will run on IC and R trains between Bratislava and Košice and EC trains between Budapest and Prague.
Vectrons aren´t painted in unified red and white colors, but in special livery "National carrier" (old version of intended livery is here).

Also, as new timetable is valid from yesterday, new line S8 is operating between Bratislava/Petržalka and hungarian Hegyeshalom 5 times a day in each direction (one train runs only to Rajka). Section Bratislava/Petržalka - Bratislava/Rusovce is integrated into IDS BK (Integrated transport system in Bratislava region). Line is operated by GySEV/ZSSK with GySEV rolling stock.
