Dresden - East Germany, March 2008

Dresden is a really beutiful city with many ancient buidings. They are all black because of the huge fire which ruled the city during ww 2.

The famous Frauenkirche, in english: woman church

Frauenkirche has been destroyed in WWII but rebuilt later. You still can see a corner of the old one.

Nice images of Dräschdn, got some more?

Common misunderstanding. The black patina comes from the iron in the sandstone, which is rusting in the air over the centuries. Buildings need to be bleached or painted to keep them bright.

I visited Dresden in 2002 and I was surprised how beautiful it was. Downtown had many old buildings and there was a castle. I thought the city had been completely destroyed in the war but I was wrong.

Dresden is an amazing city! Nice to see some of the buildings in all it's glory after being almost destroyed during WWII.

It was completely destroyed! It took many years and a lot of effort to rebuilt at least the centre of the city. And reconstruction still continues. In this Thread you'll learn everything about that:

This is a really interesting way to get water from the roof to the drain.

Keep this thread going!

A nice example of how reconstruction can be done properly!

Nice pics!

Frauenkirche should be translated as "Church of Our Lady" though, not woman church (literal translation).

Beautiful city, I'd like to visit! I like how the buildings have turned black, it looks better than the new facades.
