Maidan Nezalezhnosti
Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Ukrainian: Майдан Незалежності, literally: Independence Square) is the central square of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine. One of the main city squares, it is located on the Khreschatyk Street. The square was known under many different names but it became prominent as simply the Maidan due to the political events of great significance that took place there in the recent years after the Ukrainian accession to independence.
"Maidan" literally translates from Ukrainian as square; this word originally came from Persian. It received its current name in 1991 in the aftermath of the Ukrainian accession to independence. Nezalezhnist (independence) commemorates the Ukrainian independence achieved in 1991 in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Throughout its history the square was called by several different names. The area was known since the time of Kievan Rus', but it was not populated or developed until the 18th century, when stone-made fortified walls were constructed. The walls known as Pecherski Gates stood until 1833. Until the late 18th century – early 19th century, the area was a vacant ground known as Goat Swamp (Kozyne Boloto).
In 1919 the square was renamed to the Radyanska (Soviet) Square. From 1935 it was called the Kalinin Square to Mikhail Kalinin, the first chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
During the first years after the war, the square was completely rebuilt from scratch. It was architecturally integrated with the newly constructed Khreschatyk in the typical for the time neo-classical Stalinist architecture. The newly constructed Kiev Central Post Office and Trade-Union House with its high-rise clock located on the square to this day became some very well known and frequently pictured views of the center of the city.
In 1976-77, as a part of metro construction, much of the square was again rebuilt and it was renamed to the October Revolution Square (Polshcha Zhovtnevoyi revolyutsii). During the reconstruction, the massive cubist monument to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution was put up as well as the complex ensemble of fountains.
As the central Kiev square, following the end of Soviet era the Maidan has been the centre of public political activity. In the autumn of 1990, students' protests and hunger strikes in the Maidan resulted in the resignation of the Ukrainian Prime-Minister Vitaliy Masol.
In the 2000s the biggest political protests in Ukraine, such as the Ukraine without Kuchma campaign and the Orange Revolution took place in this square. During the Orange Revolution in late 2004, Maidan Nezalezhnosti received global media coverage, as hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in the square and nearby streets, and pitched tents for several weeks, enduring the cold and snow. The protests against electoral fraud resulted in an additional round of presidential elections being ordered by the Supreme Court of Ukraine, which were won by the opposition candidate, Viktor Yushchenko.

Kremenets is the small town in the west part of Ukraine (Ternopil region). Its population is approximately 20 000 inhabitants. According to some sources Kremenets fortress was build in VIII-IX century, and later was a part of Kievan Rus’. The first documented references to the fortress are given in Polish encyclopedic dictionary of year 1064.

Dnipropetrovsk (Ukrainian: Дніпропетровськ; Russian: Днепропетро́вск, Dnepropetrovsk; formerly Yekaterinoslav, Екатериносла́въ) is Ukraine's third largest city with 1.1 million inhabitants. It is located southeast of Ukraine's capital Kiev (Kyiv) on the Dnieper River, in the south-central region of the country. Dnipropetrovsk is the administrative center of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province). Within the Dnipropetrovsk Metropolitan area there are 1,860,000 people (2001).
A vital industrial center of Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk was one of the key centers of the nuclear, arms, and space industries of the former Soviet Union. In particular, it is home to Yuzhmash, a major space and ballistic missile designer and manufacturer. Because of its military industry, the city was a closed city until the 1990s.

St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Kyiv

A competition was held in 1898 for the designs for a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kiev, which was won by architect S.Volovskiy. His entry into the competition included a Gothic type construction with two 60 meter towers. The final revision and management of the project was assigned to the Kievan architect Vladislav Gorodetsky, and Emilio Sala added sculptural decoration in artificial stone to the construction. To increase the stability of the construction on the uneven Kiev ground, it was ensured by bore-and-stuffed piles, a newly introduced invention of A. Straus. [1] The construction work was carried out by exclusively from voluntary donations, and lasted for ten years (1899-1909).

The Dnipro River (Ukrainian: Днiпро, Dnipro), is one of the major rivers in Europe (fourth by length) that flows from Russia, through Belarus and Ukraine, to the Black Sea. Its total length is 2,285 kilometres, and 1,095 km (680 mi) with in Ukraine. Its basin covers 504,000 square kilometres (195,000 sq mi), of which 289,000 km2 (112,000 sq mi) are with in Ukraine. Еhe Dnipro is important for the transport and economy of Ukraine: its reservoirs have large ship locks, allowing vessels of up to 270 by 18 metres (890 ft × 59 ft) to access as far as the port of Kiev and thus create an important transport corridor. The river is used by passenger vessels as well. Inland cruises on the rivers Danube and Dnieper have been a growing market in recent decades.

Ukrainian cuisine has a rich history and offers a wide variety of dishes. The cuisine of modern Ukraine is based on traditional Ukrainian recipes, Ukrainian recipes also bears influences from its neighbors' cuisines like Russian, German, Turkish and Polish, Lithuanian, and what can be called the Soviet cuisine (dishes of mixed origins popular in the USSR).
Borscht (borshch) — vegetable soup (most common form made with beets), popular among eastern Slavic nations.
It is traditionally made with beetroot as a main ingredient which gives it a strong red color. Other, non-beet varieties also exist, such as the tomato paste-based orange borscht and the green (zeleny) borscht (sorrel soup).
Zeleny (green) is the second variety of a borscht. Its cooked from young sorrel, nettle, potatoes, flavouring with egg cell and sour cream.

The expression "chocolate-coated salo" (salo v shokoladi), originating in an ethnic joke about Ukrainians, has become cliché among Eastern Slavs, referring to an eclectic mix of tastes or desires.
In the 2000s, Odesa Confectionery Factory started production of candies Salo v Shokoladi. Popular singer Ruslana is a fan of this treat. The chocolate candies were invented as an April Fool's Day joke (Odesa being the de facto humour capital of the former Soviet Union). They are not actually salo; they contain a regular caramel filling with a small amount of rendered fat added as a salty flavouring.

Transfiguration cathedral (2006) in the Donetsk
The Transfiguration Cathedral was called in honour of Christian holiday – transfiguration of Jesus Christ, which was celebrated on August 19th.
History.
In 1883 in Yuzivka (at present Donetsk) began construction of stone building of Orthodox Church on the places of oldest wooden temple. And already in 1986 church was built. This church was destroyed in 1933 in the period of anti-religious campaign in the USSR.
Present days.
On Octoder 12th in 1992 Donetsk’s local authority assigned the ground area. New cathedral has been built(abo was built) on the other place and in other style than its predecessor. This building started in 1997, and the Cathedral was opened for parishioners in 2006.
