Near Koliatsou, the area has always been less attractive, and now it's really the "dead weight" of kypseli with many characterless apartment buildings from the late '60s and early '70s and no tree-lined streets like Kypseli proper. However, even there one finds occasionally interesting or unusual buildings...these shots are near Koliatsou, under (west of) Patission...

Notice the very unusual 1930's apartment building to the right:the overall modern architectural style is combined with a neoclassical - almost archaic I would say - door...

Matt Barett is a better ambassador for Athens than any state tourist campaign! I love this guy!

However, he makes some mistakes regarding times etc...he says that Kypseli was countryside 50 years ago (nothing further from the truth - it was a popular urban area)...and that the apartment building frenzy in Athens started in 1967-1974 and then became a "tidal wave" , which is also wrong, actually after 1974 the whole rebuilding catastrophy slowed down... any way, despite his mistakes, he loves Athens more than most Athenians, and that's what counts!

But, compared to this 1923 building, even the 1950's one is short. They are both 5 stories high, but notice how much taller this one is...probably something like 3.70m per floor. Who said tall is bad? The taller the better if you ask me. And yet, in the last decades, Athenians have been conditioned to believe that height is a bad thing. This is the tallest building of the road- and it still has a front yard.
This is one the BEST (by far) apartment buildings in the Athens. A few days ago I was standing in front of it, admiring the great job that architect has done! Actually, a apartment on the ground floor is currently on sale!
Congratulations! Nice pics! Indeed, Kypseli is lovely.

Does this building belong to Art Nouveau style??? It reminds me (just a little bit) of Gaudi style. I hope my question is not completely silly.

There is also an article on monumenta site with an interview of architect Dionisis Zivas who lives in this building:

Υes, I've read the interview, it's actually very interesting!
I love this building! I could not say it is art nouveau, it's too austere and modern for that. I think only the line of the balconies carries some "memories" of art nouveau.
