Thx Diskojoe! The truth is I have a very good camera (Canon 5d and 5D mark II), good lenses, a good tripod etc. I have been practising for years with my camera and trying out compositions. I'm always trying to learn from looking at people's work. I'm also trained myself in photoshop (Blending multiple exposures, HDR, RAW,B&W etc.). I have quite a library of photography books. That's the starting point.

my camera is okay. I have a sony a200. recently started using raw mode. im pretty good with the photo shop. From info i found online i have figured out how to assemble hdr photos. do you use any tone mapping software? Dont have much for lenses yet, just the 18-70 mm that came with the camera. hoping for more zoom real soon. got a tripod that made of heavy aluminum. I need to get me some photo book though. anything you recommend for a beginner? ive only been seriously pursuing photography for about 6 months now.

one more question. How long have you been practicing?

I use Photomatix all the time for HDR. The main lessons I have learned is to wait for the light, to explore an area. When I go to take pictures I now know the shots I want to get. When the light is not good I just take practice shots to see what works.

I would suggest to invest in one good wide angle lens to start with. I almost always shoot ISO 100 and always shoot around f/9 mostly to get the best image quality out of your lens.

I will have a look at the books I have. Amazon.com is still the best place to explore what you need. I'm doing it for years now. Looking at many pictures on flickr is a good way too learn. You can always study the exif data and descriptions. This is a good starting point: http://www.flickr.com/photos/patrick-smith-photography/. You can sign up for the newsletter as well.
