That's not a volcano... more like a 200-400ft hill.

I don't get it. What makes Stockton such a bad city? Unemployment rates, that's it? I mean the city looks really nice and I'm sure sooner or later someone will figure out how to reverse that downward trend.

There's also gang violence, and just violence in general. I've seen nicer neighborhoods in East LA than there are in all of Stockton.

what a lame list! Chicago? Miami? miserable cities? Hmm...maybe both cities are mentioned because of the Al Capone connection!

What about MSA and CSA?
I just understand what's the point of this kind of lists.
In the USA, just a tiny portion of the metropolitan population actually live in the central city, so that kind of ranking could be misleading. Why not to rank cities taking account the whole metropolitan area? |

![]() Of course there are plenty of metro areas rankings. What I meant was, for some reason, the rankings with cities are more common. That's why everybody believes Detroit is the most dangerous city of the world besides other misconceptions. Plz, excuse the English... |

Chicago doesn't seen miserable at all. Chicago Spire, New Museums, Olympics 2016 (maybe). I would expect it to be one of the happiest!

I agree totally. People love Chicago. When I think of miserable, I think of places like Gary, Indiana. East St Louis. Camden. Youngtown.
And I mean, how could Las Vegas, of all places, be called miserable? It's the most-visited city in the USA! And one of the fastest-growing! If the city is so miserable, why would anyone even bother to go there? Or live there? Stupid list, just plain stupid.

I haven't been to Chicago, but based on the info I read from SSC, I think shitty infrastructure and traffic are the things that make Chicago "miserable".

^ Just because I have to walk across a busy city street with cracked pavement is hardly enough to conclude that the entire city is "miserable"! Because usually, densely-populated places do have lots of traffic. And most cities (particularly the older ones) have sub-par infrastructures. Based on those two criteria, just about all American cities are "miserable" places!
![]() IMO, some better indicators of urban misery would be things such as unemployment stats, air and water quality, extreme weather, access to recreation and green spaces, homeless population, crime stats, availability of medical care, and availability of public transportation. |

Lack of public transportation isn't a very good indicator of a "miserable" populace, especially considering most cities have a tiny fraction of their population who actually use it.
The easiest thing they can do is actually ask the people if they're miserable. What makes one person miserable might not make another person miserable. A desperate housewife living in the wealthiest city with the best schools and parks might be more miserable than an inner-city single-mother raising her kids in a broken neighborhood. It all depends on each person's outlook as well as their own standards and experiences. |

Don't know much about American cities besides Minneapolis. I'll be visiting Phoenix next month so we'll see how that goes. |
