Few more from the BCC Library
1981 ![]() 1987 ![]() 1988 (wish they had kept the buildings between MacArthur and the GPO) ![]() This says 1988 on the BCC site, but I think it is earlier, the Rail Yards are still in place, and by 88 that would have been the Expo fun park ![]() 1989 ![]() 1991 ![]() ![]() ![]() 1994 ![]() 1994 - This one has me confused, the buildings in the background I can't place. I've tried flipping it, but that looks worse. ![]() ![]() 1995 ![]()

I am fairly sure that the building in the backgraound on the left is Greenslopes hospital taken from Bulimba/ Morningside. Not a very often seen angle...

...and now that I have re-checked on a map I think it is actually from Hamilton Hill somewhere over Newstead towards Greenslopes.

Thanks for that, I was thinking the picture was maybe taken somewhere in Hawthorne, looking over the river to the north, which is why I couldn't place the buildings. Also the hills didn't look right.
Now I realise it's from Hamilton, with a zoom looking west, the city out of shot to the right, one of the New Farm apartments in shot, and Greenslopes Veterans hospital and Mt Gravatt at the back. Now I know I feel a bit silly, because I live in the shot, and can see the building next door to me, half way up, mid right. Last edited by Aussie Bhoy; February 21st, 2009 at 08:30 AM. |

Brisbane has transformed incredibly from the past! It would be nice if we still kept some of the old buildings though.

I'll dig through my queensland folders and see what I can find with the Queen St photos - With the first pre mall photo, which intersection would that be???
Here's a report from the Seven News Brisbane flashback segment sometime ago on the closure of Queen St for its conversion to a mall. While CUB may be at Yatala, I recall seeing a billboard with VB Gold over the summer on the northern side of the former brewery facing the Valley.

I'd heard the monorail ended up at Sea World.
Some then and nows, or as close as I can manage from photos I've taken recently. Especially for you Fabian, after you asked about the corner of Queen and Edwards Sts (PS good flashback). Years taken from the BCC site, I'm not sure that they are always correct. 1981 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1983 ![]() ![]() 1985 ![]() ![]() 1987 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1988 ![]() ![]() ![]() (from the Courier Mail) ![]() 1989 ![]() ![]() ![]() (from above photography)

Muse scanned this one from a book back in 2005. Appears to be mid to late 60's.

That is cool, love then and nows.
Funny to think that they would have been looking at the horse driven tram as so old to their 1970 modern times, and now were looking at them in 1970 in the same way, and I guess in a few years time some future Brisbane forumers will be thinking of us the same way. |

I don't know why everyone called Brisbane a sleepy town, becuase from those old pictures, you could see a city no different to Sydney or Melbourne or any American City in those days. Great Pictures though, the skyline has changed soo much. My uncle from New York came to Brisdbane after 20 years last year, and he couldn't belive how much it had changed!

From a visitors perspective, Brisbane is much more laid back than Sydney and Melbourne. Life doesnt appear to be as rushed and not as chaotic.
