COPENHAGEN - Copenhagen Arena (12,500)

A new arena will be build in Copenhagen and open in 2013.
I will be build in Orestad, a new part of Copenhagen, and have 15.000 seats.
AEG World will construct and own it, they are known for the O2 Arena in London, O2 World in Berlin, and the Color Arena in Hamburg plus many more.

The price is not publish, but AEG will get a loan of 26.000.000 Euro that is free for 30 years. In the deal with Copenhagen city council AEG promise to have 40 sports and culture events every year.

In the run up to be choosen AEG battled the Danish company Copenhagen Multiarena A/S who wanted to build a 40.000 stadium with retractable roof, that could be formed into an arena. But the city council didn't believe in the big project and found the AEG bit more realistic and stronger. Maybe because Copenhagen already have Parken, a 40.000 stadium with retractable roof.

Now the Copenhagen city council hope that the arena will host the World Cup of Handball with in 10 years.

There aren't better renderings available at the moment as far as I know.

...but this arena isn't under construction yet - shouldn't it be in another part of the forum?

A little more:

Will the capacity be 15.000 for sport or 15.000 for concerts, which make a huge difference?

AEG have to present a plan for the financing before 15-6-09, after that, the building can start.

15000 seats. That's part of the deal.

Those arenas all look the same from the inside.

Maybe because of AEG?

They obviously dont want to spend too much money on development costs.
Aside from that its great news.

Strange to see the vomitories/exits on the same level as the suites. Thought that was a classical beginner's mistake that is eliminated from stadium/arena design since the beginning of the 90's at least.

With that design I see at least three disadvantages:

1. It reduces the amount of space for suites
2. It makes it impossible to have a separate concourse for the suite level
3. It removes the possibility to place concession stands / kiosks under/behind the stands (a pretty useful location to place them).

Anyway, hope it will be built and that it will co-host a IIHF Hockey World Championship with Malmö one day.

Another discussion about the interior design can be followed here:

It's definitely AEG, just look at the MLS facilities they own/have owned, they build concert venues passed off as "Soccer Specific stadiums" that are so similar it hurts, and i wouldn't call the arenas they operate inspired design for the most part. Some arenas are refreshingly different, but these seem like the accountants did as much of the design work as the architects,

But the layout is practical and at least the exterior is kind of cool here.

Seriously. They change the roof some and say it's "unique".

The decision to build the 58,000 square metre arena comes after a decade that saw a number of competing plans introduced but stall. Currently, the largest arena for indoor events in Copenhagen is Parken Stadium which seats 40,000. But because it is an open air stadium with a retractable roof, it has been rejected to hold some international events.
