SWIEBODZIN | Christ the King Statue | 39m | 125ft | Com

Christ the King

Interesting project this one:

The assembly of a gigantic monument of Christ the King has just begun on the outskirts of Swiebodzin, Poland.

Situated on the small hill several miles east of the German-Polish border, the statue is erected not only as a fruit of faith of the local people but also as a towering symbol of welcome to Catholic Poland, perfectly seen from both A-2 Highway and S3 Fastway.

The 167 foot statute will be higher than a famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, which is overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Designed by a priest Sylvester Zawadzki and built from private donations of the local people, the monument will be inaugurated soon.

As of August 2008:

Funnily enough, Christ the Redeemer in Rio was also sculpted by a Pole:

Location:

It will be viewable from the A2 Freeway:

Project looks very good, but it's too similar to Rio's monument

The monument to Crazy Horse - biggest in the world - carved out of a mountain top is also being sculpted by a Pole. We likes 'em big!

This is a awesome idea. Ppl want to build something new, great, not usual. Why don't let them, Stop complaining and just be envious that there are still ppl doing something 'big'.
The more - coz it's their own money, not the public.

Giant Buddha would be more spectacular in that place.

I understand ppl love big things, but why destroy the landscape which is common good? Every Polish city and many big hills/mountains have already giant crosses placed there and visible from distance of many miles, so I don't think the statue will be so unusual in Poland.

After all we have already one of the tallest churches in the world (and for sure the tallest kitschy church in the world), so the statue just makes the box of chocolates complete.

People who donated propably weren't very welthy, mostly old people I guess it would be wiser if they used this money for medicines etc. but if this giant statue really makes them happy...

Oh, what wonderful insight. I suppose I never knew that the Dutch gov't built mosques purposefully made for extremists. Thanks for enlightening me! I always thought the extremists came in and contaminated mosques, but now you've set the record straight: the dutch govts build extremist mosques, which are purified by moderates. you learn something new every day!

Anyways, what is the point of the statue? is this a pilgrimage site? or is to reiterate their town's catholic identity? no one doubts that polish people are devout catholics, is a huge statue like this necessary? will people actually worship at it, or is it just a monument?

If the local people want to put up a statue of the Creator of the Universe, they are free too. They certainly don't have to justify themselves to some nosy foreigners.

PS: Your question is pointless. Have you heard of any Catholics worshipping a statue anywhere in the world??

What if they had never bothered in Rio, or never bothered to build the Vatican, or never bothered to build giant statues of Buddha or the Pyramids or whatever, it's people reaching out and doing something memorable, what's strange about that?

The guy's building this are doing it on literally a shoe-string budget, I admire them for thinking big and have the belief to pull through with it, few do.
