Patrick's Frankfurt-Thread

Hey folks!

As I am living near Frankfurt am Main, Germany, now, I'll take lots of pics in the near future and post them in this thread from now on

The Frankfurt Cathedral (95m, seen from Friedensbrücke) is currently under renovation

The 257m tall Messeturm seen from the Friedensbrücke

The 80m tall Mainforum seen from the Friedensbrücke

The Palaisquartier construction side (136m/99m) and the Schweizer National-highrise (57m) seen from the Friedensbrücke

Commerzbank Headquarters (259m/109m) and Eurotower (148m) seen from the Friedensbrücke

The eastern part of the skyline seen from the Friedensbrücke

The Allianz-Kai (60m) is located on the other side of the Main River

The skyline seen from Frankfurt-Oberrad, a south-eastern suburb.

The skyline at night seen from the Ignatz-Bubis-Brücke

Mini-skyline at the riverside (Westhafen-Tower 112m, Heizkraftwerk West (combined heat and power plant), Mainforum 80m, Union Investment 93m, Hotel Intercontinental 67m), seen from the Alte Brücke

Now something different:
Some of the very few rebuilt facades in the old city center

The townhall ("Römer")

The Commerzbank seen from the Taunusanlage

Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Main station)

Skyper (154m) and Maintower (200m) seen from the Main Station

Inside the Main Station

Outside the Main Station

Hafenstraße 51 (93m), seen from the Main Station

Messeturm (257m), seen from the Main Station

Selmi-Hochhaus (143m) and DZ-Bank (208m), seen from the Main Station

That's it for today. Enjoy

Nice, Frankfurt does not get the love like other European cities and I always wondered if it had anything to do with its US style skyline.

Frankfurt looks gorgeous. Despite the "U.S. style skyline" the city seems like the epitome of european.

Great pictures.

Frankfurt is actually the first foreign City I ever step foot on, so you can only imagine how much I loved it.

That was back in 2000, when I was 21 and I clearly remember hoy the catedral was heavily scaffolded because of renovations.

Then I came back in 2003 for the IAA and the cathedral still was being worked on. Now it's 2009 and the cathedral still looks the same.

How long will it take? When did it start?

Frankfurt is often only cited for its skyline rather than being an interesting city in its own right.

I love the shots of the Hauptbahnhof and the rebuilt facades in the city centre. I'm looking forward to more photos from you!

It started in 2000 and will be finished this spring in 2009

I'm not normally a fan of malls (big boring sterile boxes), however, that one at least looks quite aesthetically pleasing!

Pictures of the light and water show of the german sports festival whoich was held in Frankfurt this year can be found here

this is a view towards the skyline as seen from the Goetheturm, 5km south of the city

this is a view towards the skyline as seen from Bad Homburg-Gonzenheim, 15 north of the city

and these are some views from the top fllor of the 112m tall Westhafen Tower (it's the round green one in the pictures above)

Main station and Messeturm.

Banking district. The building in the foreground is the Mainforum, built in 2003, 80m tall.

Messe with Messe Torhaus (116m), IBC (111m) and Hafenstraße 51 (93m)

Eschborn suburb. There are three highrises which are taller than 80m. You can also spot the construction site of the Deutsche Börse Cube (will be 92m tall) to the right (red cranes). Distance to the Westhafen Tower: Approx. 10km

This is the suburban midrise office district of Frankfurt-Niederrad. You can also spot the airport in the background. Distance of Bürostadt Niederrad to the Westhafen Tower: Approx. 5km

Allianz-Kai midrise just across the Main river

South Frankfurt. Residental highrises and the 101m tall Holiday Inn hotel

Henninger Turm to the right.

View to Offenbach and it's small skyline (highest tower: City Tower, 120m). The distance to the Westhafen Tower is approx. 8km.

Closer view to the newly built Opernturm (168m)

I love the Messeturm! You can also see the construction side of Tower 185 in front of this skyscraper group (red cranes).

That's it for now

My whole post sounds dumb and ingnorant, but the good thing is as a euro, you dont need to travel to usa to see skyscrappers, because you have it here. maybe not as much and not as tall, but if you have a quaterbuilding with 50 stocks or 500, doesn't matter. Ok, New York maybe, but Chicago or Los Angelos for exmaple or Denver, because of it's Scrappers??? Skylines are skylines, loosk all the same, just standing in different places.

I think it's because Frankfurt is associated with business, money and not so much with culture, art and architecture. Skyscrapers are nice addition to some cities, but they are not something that make particular cities special. I just can't imagine going to Frankfurt only to stare at office towers. I would rather go to Berlin.

Well...if you are interested in architecture...you should!
But Frankfurt has a lot more to offer. Imagine that "it was one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire. From 855 the German kings and emperors were elected in Frankfurt."
And it also "was the seat of the first democratically elected German parliament, the Frankfurt Parliament, which met in the Frankfurter Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church) and was opened on 18 May 1848." (wikipedia)
So there are many more things to see.
