hkskyline's 2008 SYDNEY Photo Collection

My Great Australia adventure in 2008 covered many places, including :
Melbourne : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=794614
Adelaide : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=748888
Cairns : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=782224
Brisbane : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=779456
Gold Coast : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=732756

There was an obvious candidate missing ... Sydney. I spent the most time in Sydney, actually, and now I present my findings to you ...

1. I think I stayed in Australia for almost 2 months, if not more. It's hard to count now with so many weekends. It was great fun as I got out to explore quite a lot of places in and around the city, and sometimes ventured further afield, like an insane weekend excursion to Cairns. I arrived in Sydney in style ... in Cathay Pacific's Business Class, happy to greet the Australian autumn.

2. Being used to the super-long transpacific flights to North America, the trip to Sydney wasn't so bad ... 9 hours were pretty easy to pass.

3. I like harbour cities. Water gives such a soothing sensation.

4. What a nice welcome shot.

5. That must be the airport, but if we were to loop around a few more times so I can get some more aerial shots, I wouldn't mind a late arrival!

7. One of the most memorable parts of my trip was the plane spotting along the fence just next to the runway. Sure, it was hard to get to, as the bus only came once an hour, but it was well worth it. It's hard to find an airport nowadays where you can get so close to the planes without being arrested or interrogated.

8. The Pylon view was quite good. Although it costs money to go up there, it was far cheaper than doing the bridge climb.

17. Finally ... the Opera House. It's quite a stunning structure, and has aged quite well.

18. I wanted to catch a boat out to that little island ...

20. If I jump ... could I land on the boat for a free ride to Circular Quay?

21. See? I saved a hundred bucks and could almost get as high as the highest point on the bridge!

Watch out for more updates in this thread as I continue my Sydney adventure. Here's a sneak preview :

26. Wander along the side streets in Darlinghurst and Paddington.

27. Smell the ocean at Coogee.

28. Try to spell Wooloomooloo.

29. Where's darling in the harbour?

30. Where's the academia at the university?

31. Spot buses when the clouds rolled in.

If you can't wait, some of the photos are already posted on my website :

Part 2 - Let's start the walk along Oxford Street and explore Paddington and Darlinghurst!

4. These type of rowhouses look very American. It won't be much different from a city somewhere in the US.

16. As autumn finishes, golden foliage appears.

17. I'm not a big fan of these garage lanes. Even with lighting, I would not want to walk down this street at night. There are just too few eyes on the street.

20. Something historic ...

23. I arrived too late to do a tour, but the guard was nice enough to let me snap a photo from the gate.

29. I then ventured into a side street to see some interesting houses.

43. Back to the main street ...

More in the next part!

Part 3 - continuing my tour of Paddington and Darlinghurst ...

1. American-looking street scenes

7. I didn't like the back-side so much, with the parking lot in the backyard. It wouldn't look so inviting at night.

Great love the bus accident, I hope nobody got hurt. I'm pretty sure the bus driver in going to get fired though.

Part 5 - Olympic Park Tour Continued

Now this is a nature conservancy zone, with a circular walkway hanging above it. It's known as the brick pit.

Part 8 - I haven't done a Sydney thread for a while, and during my housekeeping this weekend, I found a lot of photos which I haven't gone through and posted yet. So here is another extravaganza!

1. This historic building shone nicely against the morning sunshine.

2. I made my way to the Botanic Gardens for some skyscraper shots. The weather co-operated perfectly.

8. I will make my way to the Opera House in due course.

9. I'd return to Government House as it was not open to the public so early.

12. The Opera House has its special allure, and after all these years, it has aged very well.

20. I climbed up a long staircase and made my way across the bridge that lies above Circular Quay. Had I noticed the elevator I would've gone for that.

22. Looking back at this photo, it looks like I was in New York City.

34. After a brief walk across a section of the Harbour Bridge, I decided to head back into town to explore the streets.

Part 10

Sydney has plenty of beaches to choose from. Manly is quite a popular one. Although this side is just next to the pier, there are still a few takers.

Looks quite American.

Quite a nice stroll down this pedestrian-only walkway. A few stores line along the route to pick up the much-needed sunscreen, aloe vera cream when the burn does get through, and a revealing thong to show off my stuff at the beach.

Does it get very rowdy on a Saturday night?

The waters looked quite sparkling clean.

A pool by the ocean .. quite a nice idea.

It's a fossil ... no ... just a sculpture.

Prison in the distance ... probably isn't, but given its isolation and distance, it seemed like a whole world away.

Any one of you lost your boat? I think they're all mine.
