MUC | Munich Airport

Despite of the sharp world-economic downturn, Munich Airport had yet another successful year in 2008. More than 34.5 million passengers used Germany's second biggest international aviation hub during the past year. In the global rankings Munich gained ground, advancing from 28th to 27th place. By comparison: When the airport first opened in 1992, Munich was 51st among airports.

To ensure that Munich Airport continues its dynamic growth trend as an international air traffic hub, the airport began planning work for a third runway in the summer of 2005. The expanded runway system will make it possible to raise the number of hourly aircraft movements from 90 by one-third to 120. According to the current planning status, the third runway could go into operation as of 2011.

How much would this expansion cost? What was the cost of the 1st phase of the airport?

Munich's airport is great. I passed through in the summer of 2007 and was very impressed with what I saw.

I really love muc, especially because of the good infrastructure.
but sadly the connection from the airport to the city centre of munich is not the best. the transrapid would be a very nice solution for this problem...

New Satellite Terminal

Due to this growth, the Munich Airport operating company, FMG, is now in the process of planning infrastructure expansion in order to accommodate the forecasted 56 million passengers by 2020. Together with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, FMG launched an international tendering process for general planning in October 2006. Terminal 2 is a 60 / 40 joint venture between FMG and Lufthansa and was designed by Koch + Partner. Since Terminal 2 went into operation in 2003, it has almost reached the limits of its total capacity of around 25 million passengers annually.

Five professional, globally active airport planners qualified for the tender. After an anonymous, multi-stage tendering procedure that lasted more than a year, K+P has won the tendering process and has now been commissioned to complete one preliminary design for the expansion of the Terminal 2 satellite.

Munich-Franz Josef Strauss International Airport

Oh man, this airport is awesome! It is definitely the second best airport in Europe (after Copenhagen), architecturally. And, definitely the most efficient.

The same old "the unique Berlin" nonsense again. To these disillusioned fans of Berlin, even a trash can in Berlin is so profoundly unique. Please cut the crap.
