On 20th of July the Meininger Hotel Airport Berlin has been topped out at the Business Park close to the airport under construction. The opening is going to happen on 01.04.12. The Hotels of the Meininger Group are low budget hotels.

Currently under construction is, at the Airport City, the 4-stars Superior Hotel Steigenberger with 320 rooms.
The Holiday Inn Airport Schönefeld has been extended last year with lots of conference facilities, as well as last year happened the opening of the Intercity Hotel Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

The airport looks stunning and will be one of the most modern in the world when it opens. I have been following the progress of this airport on the net since initial construction and I am very impressed.

We will probably not see any A380´s at BER. They should, however, have added some more gates for heavies with wider separation. The current main pier gates (according to images) appears not to be far enough apart to enable, ie, two 744 or A332 aircraft to be parked side by side. The gates are configured for A320 or 737 aircraft.

This is the normal planning on modern airports to be flexible. If you have 2 widebodies next to each other, there will be a gate between these two which will not be used for planes during the time the two widebodies stand at the gate. But this gate can be used as a bus gate in those times.

Why not? Manchester is served by Emirates A380.

Well, Berlin is more of a leasure destination than MAN. Businesstravellers go to FRA or MUC, not TXL. You don´t see many intercontinental business destinations on the timetable. No DXB. Most intercontinental operators find it unprofitable to fly into Berlin.
And if you look at lowcost airlines, well, then AB is the most logical. But AB will not get the A380 for the time beeing. They don´t need it.

Emirates is not allowed to fly to Berlin, they would like to fly there, but the german government refused to the let them fly to Berlin, so Emirates has no rights. DXB as an airport is on the schedule of Berlin, Air Berlin is operating 3 weekly flights to DXB.

Currently Emirates has the rights to serve 4 german airports. The frequency they fly to each airport is not part of the contract so they could fly several times a day to this airport. For example, Emirates has received slots for a third daily flight to Frankfurt and they will launch the A380 to Munich.

Emirates wants to fly to more than 4 airports in germany, they want to add flights to Stuttgart and Berlin, but the german government refused because the circumstances in Dubai are much better(cheaper) than here in germany. So emirates can flood the market with more and more seats and sell them with very low prices. For the german government this adds risks for working places here in germany and adds disadvantage to the german airlines.
