Indeed, great pictures.

But what is the deeper sense of having two real stairways and only one moving stairway as shown in the recent pictures? Annoying travelers or keeping them in shape... I mean, it's an airport. People ususally are loaded with suitcases and other stuff. Assumingly, no one would walk the stairs... ?!

They probably thought it wasn't necessary since it's much easier to carry a suitcase down the stairs than up. Still a stupid idea though.

I also don't like that they chose to use boarding bridges with metal walls... glass ones would have matched the building better.

I don't know the exact reasons for the planning, but one should take into account that while they look a little like it, those stairs in the image are not part of a main entrance way to the terminal. They are the ones leading from the arrival to the departure area. People who go to BER by Taxi or individual transport won't need to use them, people arriving with the train will most likely directly use the elevators to cross the four levels. So basically, the only passengers who'll need to use those stairs are those arriving with the bus. You can have a detailed look at this setup here (be aware, huge image file)

I'm pretty sure one of the two escalators will go upstairs, the other downstairs.
Maybe regulations require a certain number/width of emergency stairs which wouldn't be possible with more escalators?

@ Bembelkönig

The amount of lifts counts three, maybe you take another view on the image.

@ KillerFrenchFry

The mobil part of the jetbridges are produced by a spanish company. The reason for making them out of steel is, as far as I know, due to the telescopic traits and wheeled mobility of the bridges. In glass they would have been much more expensive and suspectible as well, and as it was said to me, also uncomfortable concerning the inside temperature.

I dunno... a lot of new airports seem to have glass bridges these days, it's almost a shock not to see them.

Beautiful airport! Congratulations!

I admire you, you know? Because you to make space for new ultra modern airport will close 2 that are even closer to the city center, while in my Milan's airport system, the most dysfunctional of Europe, we were not able to close Linate, the key to all development problems of my beloved Malpensa airport.

The airport hub carriers are Air Berlin and Lufthansa, right?

Good luck Brandenburg.

Yeah, you're wrong. lufthansa said BER will not be the next LH hub. The third hub at the moment is DUS with 3 own longhaul routes and one route which is flown by Air China to Beijing

Yes that's the plan as far as I know. But Lufthansa said they will increase their engagement in Berlin but they didn't say exactly what they plan. There are rumors that they want to start a longhaul route to Asia, but nothing concrete is said so far. Easyjet and Germanwings will also have a bigger number of stationed planes in Berlin butthey are not really operating as a hub. The LCC will have their own part of the terminal without bridget and with walkboarding positions. In the past there have been lot of rumors about Air Berlin and how they will operate the hub in Berlin, but the latest news about their bad operational performance so far this year might also have some influence on how they will implement the new hub in Berlin. Air Berlin hast just announced a net loss of 164,5 million € in the first half of the year. The CEO Hunold will retire on 1st of september and the new temporary CEO will be Mehdorn, the old CEO of Deutsche Bahn. So it may be possible that there will be some more cuts in the near future. For the second half of the year Air Berlin announced to cut the capacity by 1.000.000 seats and will reduce the fleet by 8 planes. So overall it is a unsure perspective for the near future. So far nobody knows what will really happen.

Thanks, in fact I had heard about the crisis facing Air Berlin in fact, some cut route to Italy and I also heard that cut the fleet by depriving it of some 737.

However, it is already known (or expected) how many passengers pass through the new airport?

They plan to have 25 million PAX when they open the new airport. With the infrastructure that is being built right now they can pass 30 million PAX through. But they already have the permission to built a new satellite for the terminal. In the final build version with I think 2 satellites the airport can handle 50 million PAX, but they do not have the permission for a third runway.
