Go to LH or website of Berlin airports and read about it.

AB will get their feet warm.
Yep, 30 new routes / destinations by LH alone!!!! More than 40 if you include other airlines under the LH Group umbrella! Capacity to increase by 40%!!

6 new, additional jets to be based in BER, and 500 new staff to be recruited in the next few months!

Airberlin also announced to expand in a big manner. AB is starting a hub concept at BER.

Nevertheless, the LH plans are amazing ....

Finally, after long expectations, Bucharest will have a direct flight to Berlin from summer of 2012 -Lufthansa company. Another good thing is that we will have connection from Brandenburg Airport to JFK.

No news at all about that. Berlin has flights to JFK and EWR since a few years. What's new for next year is the 3-times weekly flight to LAX and that AB is now flying to JFK daily. And, Germanwings is currently flying to Bucharest from SXF, this flight is getting replaced by Lufthansa.

Lufthansa destinations from TXL:

Lufthansa destinations once BER opens:

What I find a bit weird is that they are still not flying to some major cities such as London, Madrid, Amsterdam, Brussels, Zurich, Warsaw or Budapest whereas they are opening new routes to cities such as Zadar, Bastia and Bergen.

They are flying to London, it is a lufthansa flight which is just operated by BMI (which belongs to Lufthansa). Brussels is connected by Brussels Airlines, which also belongs to Lufthansa just like Zurich is connected by Swiss (also Lufthansa Group)

Add Warsaw to that, which is served by Star Alliance Partner LOT. Amsterdam, Budapest and Madrid are strongholds of other alliances and served by the respective national Airlines plus Easyjet for the Budget traveller. Not much room for LH in these markets.

That is a good new. I hope they will have a direct fight from SFO to Berlin.
Do you think BER will take over Munich soon and Frankfurt in the next 10 years?

There is no way! Sorry

Because both of them are expanding:
Munich with a new terminal and a 3rd runway. (future pax 67.000.000 passengers, 120 flights/hour)
Frankfurt with a 4th runway (openend this October) and a new terminal (future pax 87.000.000 passenger, 120 flights/hour)

I agree. However, I do believe that BER can narrow the gap - not close it, or overtake MUC or FRA, but definitely get closer!

Thanks, but this is actually a thread for BER - and not for MUC!

As AB is going to be a oneworld member soon and Madrid clearly is the hub for anything that goes into this direction, I think the possibilities are rather limited. The only thing I could imagine in the far future would be maybe Lan Chile as there are still stronger connections between Germany and Chile than to most other South American countries. But even that could be routed via Madrid.

Airport development in Western countries is generally a longterm rather slow process.
The capital airport in Germany though will be probably an exception because tourism figures, the city┤s economic development and the rise of population is among the highest in Europe. The new Hub capacities at BER are likely to expand in the coming years.

In 10 years you can expect BER and MUC on a comparable level somewhere from 40-50 Mil passengers.
